Navigation mounting

Posted this on socal evo but nobody responded.

I recently picked up a Nuvi 200 and love it...But it is illegal to mount it on the windshield via suction cup, and it also restricts my view of the road. Has anybody mounted these in other places, and has anyone hardwired it?

Thanks in advance.

Its illegal to mount on the windshield, but I'd rather not have it even ON TOP of the dash. My only option right now is some 3m velcro-type material...but that looks a little cheap IMO.

Why is it illegal? I drive around with my radar detector suctioned cupped on the windshield all the time...no issues with cops?

I guess I would recommend finding some kind of mounting bracket compatible with your navi, allowing you to swivel it to your desired viewing angle. Either tape it on or screw it on the dash somewhere....

In CA and a few other states, it is technically illegal.
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d12/vc26708.htm [Section 26708. (a) (1) & (2) ]

I don't think it is rigidly enforced - although if you've already been pulled over the ossifer may add it to the list of infractions.

Some people like those bean bag style mounts, or the vent clips. Leaving these things on the dash is not a good idea, since it invites smash-n-grab thieves.

Try searching around the threads on some of the GPS forums
(like http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen) for ideas too.

My problem (I have a Nuvi 260) is that when using the suction cup on the windshield it is too far away to easily reach without leaning forward. I'm tall, and have the seat all the way back.

I hard wired mine.....it was fairly simple. just bought the harness and wired to my cig lighter switch. I used to have my NUVI on the sun visor tint strip up top on the windshield. They wouldnt see it there.
