Did I buy cheap speakers??

http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Produ...rch=p652&tp=95

I bought 2 of these and put them in the rear. They don't sound much better than stock, if at all. In order to turn the volume up much more then 1/2 way, I have to turn the bass down to 0. It sounds like the stock speakers have a little bit more bass then the JBLs. I have a clarion head unit, and no ssl.

As far as +/- go, The factory speakers are labeled with a + and - so I just matched up the wires from the little box that came with the speakers. red to + and black to -. That box has 4 wires coming out of it, and they can only be hooked up one way. the used different sizes on the connectors to match the pins on the speaker.

I know just a little bit about this stuff, but it seems like these speaker sould outperform stock speakers.

I don't think you bought cheap speakers, I think you might have better luck powering them with a real outboard amp rather then with the head unit. That's the only way your going to hear any kind of improvment IMO. At least that's been my experience.

But hell, right now I'm running my STOCK SSL speakers with aftermarket amp(s), HU, and sub.

Also using this diagram(page 119 of the wiring diagram) The wire colors don't match what's actually at the speaker.

I really don't know much about this, but if these speakers start sounding ****ty with the power comming from this headunit, how do they handle much more power from an amp??

Pop your stock speakers with a 9v battery to see what post is positive and pushes the speaker out.then you can tell what side of the connector is positive on all of you your speakers.

When you touch the 9v battery to the same place I took that pic, and match + with + and - with - it pushes out. Away from the magnet. That's how I hooked up the JBLs.

The rms rating on these is from 5 to 75 watts. Guessing the stock speaker are around 5 to 10. With the HU power not anywhere near amp quality output, the HU just isn't efficiently "pushing" those coxials. Now, get a 4-ch amp in there and power them and you'll get a "kick-in-the-pants" difference! Should have went with "cheaper" speakers...something like these : http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Produ...065S65RC&tp=95
These have a much lower RMS rating, more efficient with using HU power.

Well then maybe I'll get another pair of the same ones and a small 4 channel amp. I don't even know. I don't even know where to start with a 4 channel amp. Do I just have to match the ohm load that the speakers say with the amp?
What size do I need? Is JBLs stuff decent?? I don't need super high quality. If JBL has a decent amp for these speakers, then I'll get it. Everthing I have(besides the HU is JBL) I also have a grand touring 600 watt amp for whichever sub is just inder the "GTI"

My 10

http://jbl.com/car/products/product_...at=SUB&ser=POS

I had this amp/sub setup in my GTI, and LOVE it, I can't wait to put it in my evo.

I want to get one of these.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...211550672&rd=1

would this amp with 60 x 4 rms with these speakers that are 75 watt rms 225 peak?? All of this 4 ohm.

http://jbl.com/car/products/product_...at=AMP&ser=CSS

Or do I need more? I don't need anything super crazy.

That amp would be fine. JBL is a decent brand. There one of the few brands that actually MAKE their own speakers. Not that it should really mean much too you, but most brands don't have the capability and sublet out to someone else - much like rims for cars.

Anyway, you should be able to get a decent 4 channel amp four less then 3 bills.

it prolly doesn't sound that good because aftermarket speakers require more power than factory speakers.

I always just thought that if the speakers can handle a lot of power, that giving them a small amount would have no affect. Just that, they wouldn't be performing up to potential, not sound worse. I didn't know they would sound so much better with an amp.

I'm looking forward to get the matching pair, and the amp I linked to.
