what sub/amp combo is better, like louder, and hitting harder
How does 1 sub not sound right. I've run many combinations of one and two subs and the quantity never caused something to sound right or wrong. Proper tuning will make one sun sound better than two non tuned subs everytime due to two subs possibly causing some canceling of each other if you haven't tuned and don't have the amps setup right. For someone that claims to know so much about audio, statements like this just make me shake my head in amazement
im going with alpine speakers, headunit, speaker amp, and kicker subs, and sub amps. prolly 2 kicker CVRs or CVXs. but they wont be up ALL the WAY, cause from what i hear, the EVO is a peace a **** that rattles, cause its aluminum
Watts don't mean $hit for sound quality....if you go around touting how many watts your system has, you'll get laughed at and asked if you have a small d!ck complex. You also mentioned that you won't be pushing the amps hard....so do you REALLY think your sub is gonna be receiving 750 watts all the time if you aren't gonna be pushing your amps hard? I have to question again your "expertise" when it comes to audio when you throw wattage numbers out thinking that somehow translates to a better sounding stereo....are you planning to do a bandpass too while you're at it? *sigh*
One sub is always better than 2 for pure sq, due to cancellation, as said above.
Also Alpine also reverse engineered JL W3s to design the Type Rs when they first came out. That's from an Alpine tech rep himself. The type Rs are the first decent woofer that Alpine has ever had, except maybe dddrives.

After talking to 2 EE who both did their thesis on Sound Compression and Sound engineering I learned the following:
In a CAR 99% won't notice the difference between a low quality MP3 vs a CD!!
In a CAR the acoustics are already off, too much reflection, absorbtion, imaging is darn near impossible!!
In a CAR most subwoofers fire through a seat for gosh sakes!!
In the end all the factors that us "perfectionists" think will make such a difference in many cases are just appeasing our conscience. In a sound room a trained ear can notice many differences in music quality. In a CAR enviroment, while driving, let alone a loud EVO w/ exhaust etc, it really isn't worth it.
Buy some solid components try to get them close together and on-axis, get some pretty clean power w/ good preamp, have good grounds for everythings, and some lows and call it a day.
GLTY
I completely agree with absolutely everything you said, except maybe the 99% that can't tell the difference between an mp3 and cd. I definitely believe most people can't, but I don't know about 99%. I guess depending on the quality of your components you might not be able to tell a difference. Moot point regardless. It doesn't matter in almost all vehicles, but it's totally pointless in an evo. I got a semi high end set of components, and now I wish I would have gotten something cheaper and spent the extra money elsewhere cuz what makes them nice I can't hear over the exhaust, road noise, etc anyways. But damn are they nice sitting in a parking lot with the car off!
I love my system too, but don't just sit in my car in a parking lot and listen to it, at least not with the car off. I recommend to anyone to put a system in their car it's the best mod I've done. If you consider yourself a "music" person it's great to drive a EVO slow and still enjoy it. In fact I was getting ultra bored with my car because normal driving was so "boring" "loud" "stereo sucked". Now with a system I can crank my favorite music and enjoy driving normal again.
As far as MP3's do a test, I did, I lost a -1db, but once compensated for my wife, daughter, and neighbor could not tell the difference on Fleetwood Mac or Nora Jones instrumental. Like I said once you're on the highway the difference is negligible.
Car systems are awesome!! What's you're setup?

"If you're listening to waves from two sources at the same time:
a high pressure from one will cancel out a low pressure from the other
two high pressures will reinforce each other
two low pressures will reinforce each other "
If every thing is the same (subs, box, amp, singal and in phase) two subs will not cancle each other out and = more out put .
SQ is like an a$shole , your idea of it is ,yours is rosey and everyone else stinks
back in the day .... I went to alot of sound offs and Ive heard cars set up for "SQ"
the Idea was to get a prefect 40 on RTA (Real Time Analyzer) and other factors (SPL , Install.....)
But the cars with great RTA scores sounded to me tinny , flat , bright on the high and like the sound was coming from a can . But thats "SQ" to the IASCA and NSPL and USAC ..
So no one can you what sounds good to YOU .
The two set up in this thread JL vs Alpine , eather one can suck or eather one can retrune sound and SPL . It more about what works best in YOUR set up ( car/trunk room/ subplacement/box size/power/Batt power..) A well put together system with Cheap parts will blow away ("SQ and SPL) a high price non optimal set up .

I currently have an alpine ida-x001, an alpine 4 channel amp (there lowest end one), bridged to power a set of polk sr6500s. The amp was purchased for a temporary system, but has turned out to be a little more permanent. I also wanted to get rid of the x001, but haven't found a deck I want to replace it with, and I'm coming to realize that the effort and money to switch back to cds isn't going to make a difference, and the ipod is pretty convenient. No subs at the moment, but I have a JL 12w3 and an Image Dynamics 10 sitting around. I'll probably scrap the 12 and get another 10. I do have a Rockford symmetry 28band eq laying around that was going to go into the car, but I've decided not to.
I had a pretty nice system being planned/in the works, but I realized that in the end, like you said, it won't sound any better going down the highway than a system that I spent half the money/time on.
I can hear a slight difference between music I download off itunes and music I download from limewire, etc. But the music from itunes is good enough to stick to it.
