Be careful when wiring NAV head units!

Now it wasn't the install where I had the problem! I'll start my little story. Shortly after buying my EVO they started offering the Orbital double DIN conversion kits. I was lucky enough to get one of these as well as a Pioneer AVIC-Z2 Nav unit. I am an Electronics Technician in the Navy with a RADAR background, and Micro-Miniature soldering specialty, so I did an amazing job on the wiring harness to include heat shrink tubing. The install was flawless and the system performed great for quite some time.

Fast forward to October 2009...My wife drives me to work because my battery is dead (which means my alarm is also non-operational). I get that phone call from the apartment complex... Mr. ****, your passenger window was broken and it looks like the radio was stolen. Boy did my heart sink! I finally got home to see the damage, file the police report, and make the insurance claim. Within a week my window was fixed and I had a new AVIC-Z110BT on the way.

Now on to the title of the post. When the thief ripped my head unit out, the speed sense wire ended up shorting out. This in turn blew the speed sense unit. I didn't notice it until I tried to drive the car and saw that the speedometer and odometer weren't moving. Luckily since it was part of the original theft that caused the damage, my insurance took care of that as well.

In December I did my masterful soldering job again for the Z110 and wired it up without a problem to the car. It fired right up and sounds great! I kept it in there for about a week then took it out because I left for deployment Jan 18th and I didn't want to take that chance again!

Now I have decided to go back to the stock stereo and save up for a single DIN radio, I never really used the Nav much in my car anyway.

I plan to sell it pre-wired for the EVO, the Orbital climate relocation kit, and the Double DIN kit from japanparts (the orbital one was damaged in the theft), but my post count is too low right now to get it posted.

So what exactly is there to be careful of, thieves stealing your radio? Maybe I'm just not getting the point of this thread.

Make sure nothing is shorted before you put power to the car. In this case the speed sense wire was shorted and I fried the speed sense.

That was the one connection I was most concerned about during the install. Tapping into the parking brake and the reverse lights were easy, but the speed sense wire can cause the most damage.
