remote won't work

anyone had this problem:
i bought my car used and the previous owner had an engine timer put in it. it was removed when i purchased it, but the remote entry has never worked. the mechanic said it wouldn't even go into learn mode.
i, myself, have no clue what learn mode really does. so i open this to the brain trust; what happened and how can i fix it?
i have also put in the same engine timer since.

Learn mode is so the transmitter and receiver "understand" each other much like a garage door opener. Think of it like 2 walkie talkies on the same frequencies.

I don't think the Evo is different from the Lancer in the alarm, I've never had to program mine yet but I'll look more into it.

This will help

It's very simple, you just need some wire, like the thread above says, alot of people think it needs some diagnostic complex tool but it's pretty basic. On my E39 BMW I accidentally programmed 2 cars on one remote while playing with the remotes, the other car was also an E39 which belonged to a friend and it was the most hilarious thing figuring out how to un-assign it because I pretty much had the power to unlock his car with my remote

EDIT: Another link for you http://www.programyourremote.com/cla...yAd.asp?id=984

read it, but do i need the huge diagnostics tool (which my meager pay has not afforded) or is that where you're putting the wire?
