Audio build - would appreciate some advice/recommendations.

I am in the same boat as you, long time alpine fan but, the newer models simply can't keep up with other manufacturers features. Another big thing for me was the display colors. Blue just distracts me at night.
I chose the KD-AHD758BT. You can adjust the colors on the radio to pretty much anything you can imagine. Right now I have it matching my stock gauges.
I was worried about the sound quality at first but its not an issue at all. Clean crisp sound and you can connect your smartphone via bluetooth for phone calls or playing music.
