Keys chiped?

Hi I just recently purchased an 03 evo 8 gsr and was wondering if the keys are microchiped, and you have to go to the dealer for a new spare? When I bought the car the previous owner said he didn't have the spare. So I only have 1 key, and after a horrible day where my brother accidentally locked his keys to his 98 740il in the trunk and not even a lock smith could break in. I'd like to be prepared with a spare... So do I have to go to the dealer or can I just have one cut from anywhere?

Thanks. I guess I'll get an emergency spare for the doors and eventually get another full one from the dealer. Any idea what they charge?
