How to use the trunk release button?

I just recently bought a 2010 Lancer Evolution MR and it has a button on each front door handle (no clue what they do) and one on the trunk that is suppose to open it. I've tried holding and pushing it multiple times, but no luck. Anyone know why it wouldn't be working? I got this used, and it only had a key, no remote. I'm not sure if a remote is needed for it or not. Also, does anyone know what the buttons on the door handles do?

I suppose you have an Evo X, aren't the described buttons for the Key-Less System (actually to lock the doors/trunk)?

I've tried using them to lock doors as well, but still nothing. I saw a video of someone opening the trunk with it, but the lights flash before he presses it. I assumed I needed a remote to use it, but decided I'd try to confirm it here.

Change the battery on your remote.
