Want to trigger LEDs by doors/unlock to light entry way

2005 Evo GSR

Searched first, couldn't find much...

I bought a set of LED strips, the idea is to install one along each front door entry way to light the area when door is either opened or when unlock is pressed on the FOB. I don't want them on all the time, but want a relatively TASTEFUL illumination that isn't too tacky, you know what I mean?

Module for controlling the two strips is the same, with a power source for hardwiring that needs 12v with what I believe is ground and negative wires, but there is no documentation really...

What is the best way to achieve this without a lot of complexity in wiring, as I have little experience with wiring?
  • Dome light - I figured this would be easy, because doors and fobs both turn on interior lights. Dome light fuse appears to be in the engine bay, but I couldn't even get it to work by pigtailing off of the fuse... then t here's the how to get it wired through the firewall... is this the way to do it? Is there a way to splice into wires already routed to the interior and get good results with this?
  • Door trigger - other people with other cars mention in various forums that they are working this into the door triggers themselves, so any time the door is opened, they are on, and any time it is closed, off. Is this better? Is it incredibly hard to do on an evo?
Thanks in advance for any pointers!

I did exactly this on all of my cars. On the evo you have what electrical engineers call "pull down" switch inputs. There is a switch that is open, and when you physically open the door it provides it a ground so the signal for the computer gets pulled to ground. You can use this source of ground to provide a switched ground to your LED strips. You WILL HAVE TO diode isolate the 4 doors individually so it will not be able to source a ground in the module!

It's a bit trickier on newer cars like my 2012 mazda 3 because the circuit works the opposite way... it's a normally closed design. Which involves transistors and is a tiny bit more work.

You're some sorta digital **** wizard! Do a write up! Enquiring minds want to know! Or you know, live life and eat nachos. But a write up with napkin scribble drawings would be cool.

thank you. it sounds possibly doable for an electrical noob, but also sounds like I would need a write-up with at least the where's what's and a little bit of how's.

If you can do that it'd be greatly appreciated!

Here are some videos - I will explain better how to do this. I have been recovering from Covid and trying to get caught up on work so I have been slim on time.
