Evo 8 HID ballast
I have a 2003 Evo which I bought new and which has been amazingly reliable over the years. With 49,000 miles it still has it's original clutch, although that's about gone. Right now the car won't pass inspection because it has a bad hid ballast. The part in my car is a MR574777 and it's discontinued. I have found several Ebay and other online listings for Evo ballasts but the part numbers vary. I have reviewed prior posts on this issue and I still have questions. Will ballasts with the part number XCTO2871 or 3173 work in this car? Or any other ideas on how to address this?

I bought ballasts off eBay a few years ago and although advertised as MR574777, the ignitor wire was not long enough. They were for an Acura TL by the part number. I messaged the seller and they told me they should work and to basically pound sand. Beware of this type of seller.
I'll check the part number on the ballast later if it helps

I built a custom set of lights a few years ago and thought about this. If it were me, I would seal the bottom of the headlight with a false cover and use aftermarket ballasts mounted to the false cover. It would allow more flexibility. This will require some fabrication talent though.
Yes, I found a Denso ballast out there which works with a D2 bulb so this is definitely a good back up plan. I ordered today, one from Tennessee and one from China, X6T03173 used ballasts which I hope still work and will fit in place of my original MR574777 ballast which lasted 20 years. And I will report back once I see if these work or not. Thank you for your suggestion which would be a permanent fix!
