I've noticed my car smells really bad at wide open throttle. Sometimes I can smell it in the car when the sunroof is open. I was following my car the other day and it was terrible...much more than I've ever smelt following ANY other car before, even at WOT. Not a sulfurish smell like others have been complaining about, just a VERY VERY strong (4banger)exhaust smell. Is my car running too rich? Its almost like blowing unburned or partially burned fuel out the exhaust. Im running a XS 3" catback and intake. The car runs fine...I think...hmmm...

how does your exhaust tip look?
clean or black?

 

The inside of my tip is always black. I clean it regularly and then all it takes is a few miles and its black again. I used to have the same problem with my Lightning, bit it wasnt near as bad. I run 93 octane in FL.

 

Mitsubishi programmed your stock ECU to run extremely rich through-out the rpm band range as a safety precaution against detonation.

A little fuel tuning like an ECU flash or a piggyback fuel computer like the super AFC can help to remedy this problem.

No more stinky tailpipe and more power to boot.
