Penzoil Synchromesh: Long term review
Just wanted to give an update. Prior to replacing the fluids, I was getting a pretty bad 3rd gear grind. I replaced the fluid, and that seemed to really help. However, after some mileage, the grind is back. So it's goin in for service.
However, I still like this fluid better, and will stick with it after I get it back.
Anyways, just wanted to give my .02
Happy new year

It (regardless of which name you buy it under) seems to be the best shifting fluid out there for the Evo tranny right now (at least for those who have TRIED the different fluids). However, it needs to be changed more often as its non-synthetic formula seems to break down quicker. Since you can pick it up for $5 a liter under the Pennzoil banner at your local Auto Zone, I change it about every other oil change. Hell, I'm under the car anyway.
BTW, I have over 30,000 miles on this fluid to date...

I was gonna write a longterm review also. I had a 2nd gear grind when shifting at high rpms, so I also put in Pennzoil Syncromesh. It also helped temporarily, but now the grinding's back. Is this something they cover under warranty?

If you read the responses and see the statistics/polls on this forum about grinding gears, you'll probably figure out that it's not a driver's issue. One of the polls reports 70% owners having a gear grinding issue. Do you really believe 70% of owners don't know how to properly shift? (yes I am aware that the poll doesn't really represent all owners) However, there was a sample of about 350 owners that responded, so it "could" be a rough gauge.

My guess on the frequency of gear grinding problems is that most people are shifting too fast for the stock restrictor and clutch line. To shift this car as fast as a Honda without changing these parts or putting in a more stiffly sprung clutch (which will lessen the "delay" of those parts) seems to wear out the syncros quickly.
I had the occasional 1-2 grind... I removed the restrictor and this went away for the most part... along with any "burning of the clutch". The action was still "notchy" though. After moving to the Syncromesh/shift (same stuff made by Pennzoil) that went away to. If I let the tranny fluid go more than about two oil changes, it will get a little notchy again, and I will occasionally have a grind. I attribute the returning grind to the fact that the Pennzoil allows me to be pretty lazy with the shifts. When it "wears down", it is less forgiving of a lazy leg.
The how to on the restrictor is at http://www.evomoto.com/tech_info.php...=3_4&tech_id=4. Its titled Braided Clutch Line / Restrictor Removal.
