4000 rpms - Help
4000 rpms - Help
This may sound like somewhat of a noob question, but I am not extremely knowledgable about the 4G63. Anyways, I have had my evo for over half a year, and I am just now about to take my first big road trip. My question is this - I am going to be cruising on the interstate for extended periods of time. I notice that the evo revs are rather high at cruising speeds. I know I will be cruising at around 85 or 90, which will put the rpms around 4 grand. Is it going to stress the engine alot to be driving constantly at this speed for long periods of time? I know my gas mileage will be in the crapper, but I just want to know if it is hard on the engine, or if I will cause alot more wear and tear as opposed to driving at 3500 rpms. Ive searched for threads on highway rpms and such, but was unable to find something that would help me. Thanks for any info.....
No problems at all, the engine would handle continuous 4k revs forever. I’ve done long trips at far higher rpms than that, maybe not continuous but on the other hand not often below 4k
And I wouldn’t be surprised if your milage will be quite ok after all. You won’t use the turbo much at constant speed so no need for that much fuel.

I drove from SF to Disneyland (400+miles) avg. 80-85mph some times hitting 90+ with only one gas stop. I did this twice once in the summer and once in winter. In the summer I had two passengers with trunk full of luggages and AC turned on.
The last trip I had P2, full TBE with HF cat, a drop-in filter, and a lower ic piping. All I can say is, even though the Evo gets lots of chips and debris, it was FUN. I could have rented a car and saved the Evo but driving the Evo on long trips is awesome especially going up mountain roads doing 90+mph while other cars can only manage around 80mph.
Currently, I got about 27K miles since Aug.2003 with couple more mods and still on the stock clutch.
Now this is why I paid $30K+ for the Evo.

im averaging 18k miles a year. And cruise alot bet. 80-90mph.
the gear ratios remind of a honda so much. if this car had a bigger motor with longer stroke i would worry. But the stock motor can wind to 7800.
