You're exactly right. It's a huge fine. The California Highway Patrol and many local law enforcment now have training in what to look for too...they pop the hood and check for a CAI, or blow off valve and they look for excess exhaust deposits on the bumper. They also use these little wands with a mirror on the end of it to look under you car for a catalytic converter if they suspect you might have removed it.

I'm not gonna get into the whole environmental debate. We all have our own opinions...especially the CA guys who can't get anything better than 91 octane...but if you're going to go catless invest in a cat-delete pipe that is designed to LOOK like it has a catalytic converter. For CA guys I believe this is one of the companies that is working on one...

Realistically though...if you're running a full 3" TB w/a high flow cat it should be pretty damn close to a full 3" TB w/cat-delete...at least I would think. I think some sort of customized mod-specific ECU reflash would be recommended in either instance though to maximize the performance gains.

catless = louder, smelly and a bit more performance
highflow = quieter, no smell and a bit less performance.

buschur tested his highflow vs. his cat delete and lost 8whp at the top end. to me i've been catless for over a year w/my wrx and it's gotten old

cat delete, because if you get the hi-flow cat, there is still going to be restriction

If your worried about small increases in air pollutants then stick with the stock parts....

If its illegal to run your car catless in your area then you could hollow out a high flow cat making it just like a straight pipe...That way it looks like a cat but performes like a cat-delete....

Yeah, keeping the stock cat with a catdel is what I did too, my ugly stock cat is sitting in a box...kinda funny you can hold the stock cat up to the sun and you can't see ANY light through it...restrictive? I think so

It is illegal in my area, we have the roller dyno and idle emmission tests, but AWD vehicles are exempt for the rollers. As for a small increase in pollutant, a removed cat will not passs emmision test on stock car (beside overly large cams) It will add a significant amount of poolutant (atleast according to what the emission station measures) Most mods are fine in terms of emmisions (overly large cams and an oput tune, overly rich will also kill the emssion test).

I choose to modifed my vheicles, a well tune vehicle can look like stock in terms of the emmsion test measurements (as long as it has a cat and reasonable cams). A modified vehicle doesn't have to be a gross polluter, I choose to keep it that way and not worry about $2500 fines and smog checks every year. Atleast I can feel like I am socially aware of the enviorment.

You can do as you please, the people that really get me, it the idiot gutting the cat in 120hp POS that gains 3 hp....

Also what brands do you recommend? i want a deep rumble, but not that loud so i would get the cops attention. Thanks
Helix Turbo back...
