Question on separating TC from Tranny
Question on separating TC from Tranny
Ok i have my TC pretty much 95% outta my car. basically, now its just the spline comin outta the tranny wedged in the TC. Question is, any special way of separating? the car's on jackstands so not much room, but tried prying as some1 shakes it and it wont separate more than an inch from tranny. its the spine of the tranny. The axle is outta the passenger side, but i left the whole assembly on the driver side intact cuz the axle went into the transmission, not the TC, but is the driver side axle that long that it goes all the way into the TC? Anyways, any feedback will help. thanks.
you need to pull the shaft out of the driverside side of the transmission. slidehammer works the best. If you read Joes evo8 clutch/tc install directions in the how to/ installation section it explains exactly how to do that.

^ what he said. That drivers side axle simple passes through the tranny and goes into the transfer case. The axle will pop off the tranny side, and then the shaft that the drivers side axle was connected to will have a threaded end exposed. Thread a slide hammer into it and pop it out, it's about 10-12 inches long and will slide right out, allowing your TC to separate from your tranny.

Ya the driverside half shaft must be removed. There is a circlip holding it into the TC. I rigged a tool to pull the axles easily. You can try prying it with two screw drivers or prybard on each side, but be prepared to mar the shaft up a bit. I have seen a few guys try slide hammers with no problem, the trick is to push the axles in as far as it can go so the tension on the circlip will be loose and then give it a nice tug and she should pop right out.
The guys above are correct. You need to remove the driver's side axle and then remove the output shaft in order to seperate the transfer case. I used the clutch removal instructions in the DIY section to get everything out. The transfer case pulled out of the tranny no problem.

ok i'll just take the driver side axle off and use 2 flatheads to pry. the passenger side axle slipped off pretty easy. this job isnt half as bad as i thought it'd be. one question, i saw lots of fluid leaking out of i separated the TC from tranny after i drained teh TC, will i need to fill the tranny with some more fluid cuz i heard the tranny feeds fluid into the differential. or somewhere in the TC. what fluid should i use besides Redline heavy shockproof in the TC? i was thinking diaqueen but i just need 2 quarts or so for the TC not 5.
Go get an 8mm x 1.25 pitch bolt from a Home Depot or Lowe's, it only needs to be 2" long or so. screw that in to the end of the stub axle on the drivers side once the drive shaft is removed from the drivers side. (sounds like you have already removed that) You can now use either a slide hammer with a forked end, or a forked rod like a ball joint removal tool. It looks like a big two pronged fork, you can get it at Autozone, actually you can probably find the 8mm x 1.25 pitch bolt at Autozone too. If you use the ball joint remover, just slide it over the bolt that you screwed in to the stub shaft so that the fork is between the bolt head and the stub shaft. Get a hammer and give the forked rod a short sharp rap towards the outside of the car pulling on the head of the bolt in the stub shaft, it will pop the stub shaft loose, then you just pull it out. Sounds harder then it is, you are just using the bolt as something to grip against so that you can remove the shaft.
ok need more help, tc is basically off, i got the shaft outta the drivers side, another problem. the TC wont come down. few things are holding it back. 1. theres another shaft coming outta the tranny. it seemse to wiggle when i touch it but dont see it coming out. 2. a piece of the TC is touching the oilpan not letting it come down. 3. the crossmember holdin the backside of tc up. right now its just resting on the crossmember. any help?
