would u thermo wrap?
I would say you should do coating over wrapping, if water gets into the wrap and whatnot it will cause more problems. I'm leaving mine alone untill somone has a serious problem with it heating up the oil pan.
Put this on your oil pan http://www.thermotec.com/products/full/16500/16500.html
Wrap with this http://www.thermotec.com/products/full/11001/11001.html
Seal with this http://www.thermotec.com/products/full/12005/12005.html
This is a nice product aswell http://www.thermotec.com/products/full/11240/11240.html You can cut it and wrap the exhaust manifold with this..

Is it really necessary to wrap the down pipe? I'm about to put on an R-SR turbo back this weekend and would like to hear some thoughts... It's already ceramic coated too.

Wrapping the DP has nothing to do with preventing the oil pan from heating up. That's what heat shields are for. Wrapping the DP serves the sole purpose of preventing radiant disapation of heat - thus keeping hot exhaust gasses, hot. The purpose is to maintain optimal exhaust gas velocity.
Higher exhaust gas velocity, better torque...

You are right in saying that the heat shielding applied to the pan would protect it better than wrapping the DP though.
Ceramic coating the DP would be your best solution but, is still probably overkill and would be a negligable gain in power.

If the DP didn't help heat up the oil pan, you wouldn't need the heat shield. And yes, coating the downpipe most importantly helps exhaust velocity. But wrapping/coating the down pipe has SOMETHING to do with the oil pan.
I wrapped my downpipe. See it here: http://users2.ev1.net/~subaru/evo_web/evo_exhaust.htm
This does keep the oil pan cooler but the main purpose is to keep the exhaust gas temperature as high as possible, which increases the gas velocity. It also seems to keep my Random Technologies 3" CAT nice and hot, no check engine light. My down pipe is stainless so I am not concerned with condensation or rust. It also got rid of some of the "ringy" sound the exhaust made after installing the big downpipe. It has held up very well too, after almost a year it still looks almost as good as the day I wrapped it...

O, I also put a piece of heat blocking material on the oil pan..I can post some pictures if you want...there is also a piece on the side of my buschur lower intercooler pipe which is going to the turbo outlet pipe..
