Walbro FP actin up...

Today, for no apparent reason, my Walbro 255 Fuelpump started getting louder and higher pitched. (Sort of sounded like when you cover the end of a vacuum cleaner and the motor kicks in overdrive)

I noticed no other symptoms other than the sound...it went back to normal after like 15 minutes...then did it again 1 hour later.

WTF? This thing is only a couple months old and I know it was installed correctly.

anyone heard of this?

I've heard nothing but bad things about the Walbros when used for higher fuel needs. I believe there are some flow bench comparisons floating around comparing several fuel pumps.

They're cheap, but i wouldnt trust my engine with them.

I'd actually look into rigging one of those 280l/h Supra fuel pumps up. The Supra Fuel Pump (Denso I believe) is tried and true.

jsprat7: The fuel level was at 1/2 tank.

dolemite45: The fuel pump does not care about how much fuel you are using. It pumps 255 liters per hour at idle or at WOT. the fuel injectors meter the fuel usage. Therefore the fuelpump would not care if I was racing all day or idling in traffic.

Basically, I just want to know if I should be worried. I'd hate to have to change my FP on the shoulder of the road 100 miles from nowhere. (I put the stock FP in a box in the trunk just in case)

I've had mine for a year/12,000 miles.

No issues.

I think it gets battery voltage on normal driving then the voltage increases ( hence the high pitch noise from the pump) if more fuel is needed on full throttle applications.
I'm not sure though someone correct me on this.

This happens to me on roadtrips or when I'm driving around town all day. It gets so loud that you could hear it below 30 miles an hour. Is this supposed to be normal?

I drove it over 120 miles today, just cruising around, drove it fast in some spots, but mostly @ the speedlimit (can't afford another triple-digit-ticket) Fuel pump worked fine. It didn't get loud like yesterday. I really don't know what's going on with it.

I hope this doesn't happen often on these fuel pumps cause i have mine sitting in my room waiting to be installed. Did u guys install them yourselfs or were they professionally installed? Also, did u use the install kit or did u just do a swap for the stock pump? Im not sure if this has anything to do with the noise, but im just curious. Thanks!

Installed it myslef. (it's actually quite simple)
I don't see why you would need any install kit. It is a direct swap.

I haven't heard mine all winter. Yesterday it got kinda warm here and when I got to work my fuel pump was whinning like crazy. Didn't do it all day today though. I've had mine since June and more than 20,000 miles.

There are at least 500 out there in Evos now and none have failed yet that I've heard of.

got another one here. a friend of mine has the exact same thing with his. about 5000 miles on the pump, just 3 months ago, the damn thing started whining real loud. Cant pinpoint an exact cause, sometimes its loud, sometimes its normal, doesnt seem to have anything to do with heat or how long its been running, it just goes and comes as it pleases, no problems yet, no effect on performance.

anyone contacted walbro yet?
