Getting cams and what ealse?

Hey,
Im planning on getting hks 272/272 cams. The local shop was saying i need this and that on you dont need to get this and that and blah blah. Ok. Ive searched this all before also and couldnt fit the answer to my exact question.
To do cams with my mods below to be tuned with a afc what should (not going overboard but the ness.) i get. I think i want to get head studs cause alot of people say its a ness. Now with the timing belt and head gasket and sprockets and ect. do i need that? I plan on getting a bigger turbo soon. Is the 272/272s a smart choice? Now.....Installation....I've done all my bolt ons. Installation is pretty big bucks for this. Is this something i could handle with my basic and a little bit more skills? Ive never been inside a motor before i guess i should say. Anyways just set me up with a package and tell me what i need cause im not really sure. ERic

Its not a very hard install, if you get someone to help you with just a little mechanical knowledge that would be a plus. I did all but the cam gear by myself, needed a second person to help with getting the new cam gears in. As far as what a necessity, none of it. You can do the cams by themselves, and be done if thats what you want to do. I did the cams, and cam gears, it just made since if I was planning to do them anyway. As far as the head studs it is a good idea, but I didn't do them and I know alot of folks with cams and cam gears that didn't and had no negative results by not doing them. I would defintely not change your timing belt its much more headache, unless you have over 70K on your car. If the shop is planning to take all that down just to change the cams, I'd find another shop you don't have to go through that its much more work. Good luck.

I would say get the headstuds AND a fuel pump. More cams provide more air, more air needs more fuel. I'm sure andrew at dyno4mance would agree.

Now for the install i thought the cams were in the head. Are they just under the cover? And to do the headstuds you have to take the head off. How hard is it to do headstuds. I know you have to tourque them.

There are two schools of thought on Head Studs. Sure the best way to do them would be to take the head off. I do not see a problem with doing one at a time. I did it that way and so have countless others with no ill effects. They are easy to do. Yes the cams are under the cover. They are of course part of the head, but not in it per se. This is a job that you could do yourself with some planning and patience. Nothing about mechanics is rocket science. If you put your mind to it and think everything through in advance then you should be able to install or fix just about anything even without any training. The beauty of the internet is the ability to do your homework about a project like this in advance. See what you are in for and see problems that others have had so you know to avoid them . I did this for days prior to my install. I had already done it 10X in my head prior to picking up a wrench. Everything went smooth and the car runs great. OH yeah. Trade those 272's for 280's Good luck

Evomoto has install instructions for slapping cams in. Its a good read. Ur also going to need a belt tensioner tool for the install. AMS just finished them today. If i were u, i would read the evomoto instructions a couple of times. Just to make sure ur up to the job. Good luck.
