Question Changing synchros - replace clutch?

Mitsubishi will replace my synchros. Got 12k on the Evo with a rough shift 1-2 and 3-4. Dealer says there now is a factory replacement.
Should I spend $550 on an ACT Street clutch and have Mitsu put it in while they got the transmission out?
Factory clutch is OK except a little chugging when its cold. Car is stock with no big plans to up power.

No need to change it if you don't launch it. I had 35k on my stock clutch when I took my car in to get syncros replaced under warranty. The service manager asked me if I wanted to go ahead and change out my clutch since it was really worn. He charged my $150 for a new one installed!!!

So I can expect about 35k on a stock clutch?
Did a small launch test - from 3500 rpm - clutch smelled like hell. Is an ACT clutch better?

Talk to the service manager about it. Let him know that the ACT is an improvement on the stock pressure plate holding force and the clutch disk is an improved material. What you are looking for is to have him give the nod to putting this clutch in with no warranty ramifications in the future. There really is no harm in putting this clutch in and it will outlast the stock clutch.

If your not going to mod don't change it. The stock clutch can last you a while if you don't launch and drive it properly. If you do decide to put an aftermarket clutch make sure that it won't void your warranty.

Dont do it. if the dealer screws up the tranny rebuild in any way, and you had them install non factory clutch, they will blame the clutch and void your drivetrain warranty.

I went through this very scenario a few miles back. decided NOT to have them put in an aftermarket clutch at that time. when they screwed up the work and had to redo it, they couldn't blame it on anything.

the dealer is sneaky s.o.b.

If you are daily driving the car, and the trans is being repaired, now is the time to change the clutch depending on it's wear level. An upgraded clutch is a good thing as long as it fits inside guidelines. I personally would upgrade, but that's me.

Like Evillusion said if they screw up the transmission rebuild they will blame the aftermarket clutch. You know how Mitsubishi is notorious for voiding warranties, so why take the chance now to save a few bucks, when it may cost you more in the long run.
