A Question for the "Go-Fast" Gurus

Does it mean anything when my car "farts" fire? Since installing the XEDE ECU a month ago, my car consistently shoots about a 1-2 foot fireball when shifting through 2nd, 3rd, and barely at 4th gears whenever I drive aggressively. Also, sometimes when not driving aggressively, like shifting around 4500-5k RPMs. At first, I didn't realize what that sound was, then my brother was trying to keep up in my mom's new Boxster S (which he couldn't do) and he told me about seeing the fireballs. We got it on video tape, and FWIW, I actually love the video....If you want so see it, PM me, or better yet, someone can host it for me....

It sounds cool and it looks even cooler. So, if nothing's wrong, I'm not gonna worry about it. I've seen a ton of race cars do it, just never a car that I've owned. The only problem I've noticed is a funky grime on the rear bumper that won't clean off. So, I've ordered a heatshield to fix that problem.

For those too lazy to check my sig, here are the other performance mods: Helix DP, Helix Test Pipe, HKS Carbon Ti.

My car does the same thing. I think it's because it's running rich. I haven't been able to tune in all my new mods yet.

It typically means you are running without a catalytic converter.

Be advised.

unburnt fuel in the exhaust igniting....
dont get too worried. the car may be running slightly rich depending on how often this is happening.

Yep same thing with me, no cat means you smell like *** and shoot flames on occasion.

ya this equals = bad tuning. go get that baby tunned. check your a/f ratio.. prob running like 12:1 .
flames should NOT be happening. Your car running rich should give you at worst a lil' cloud when you shift and smell like ***/gas. Flame's is the next step past that.
If this is happening as often as you stated in your original post I would get in the car with somebody that knows how to tune and get that baby tuned right asap. you'll get better overall response from the car and prevent any 'possible' issues.

12:1 aint exactly rich bud

Its normal for a turbo charged car with no cat (Turbocharged cars need to run richer than NA) but almost any car will between certain shifts.. it is exagerrated greatly if you change injectors but can't compensate for the dead time or injector size very well (Using only an AFC for example). Dont worry about it :P Ill host your movies if ya want. Send them to me through E-mail or something

stryst@hotmail.com

They will be put up on www.thedrunken.com

Ill make you a user too if ya want then you can upload movies and pics of anything you want.

RIGHT! 12.1 is about the limit for an EVO!

Does this happen with 93 Oct or just race gas?

Any gas will make her shoot flamage...mine is overly rich (Trying to figure out what to do for good management) and mine shoots one damn near every shift. Im at around 10:1 at 7,500rpm. It may be my imagination but it seems race gas fireballs are usually bluer. Most seem kinda blue anyways though
