MR Trans Swap?

Is it possible to swap the MR 6-speed into an 03 evo? Has anyone attempted this? Does the ACD system get involved?

Yes, it has been done. Oddly, the guy that did it went right back to the 5 speed some months later. He didn't like the 6 speed. Oh, and I think Larry Webster swapped his 6 speed for a five.

The five speed is a stronger choice. Why swap?

Yes.. TRE www.teamrip.com does have the EvoMR tranny and the components needed to swap it into a 5 speed Evo..

However, I agree with the other posters, that extra gear isn't there to improve top end, but give more gear selection choices for road racing, unfortunately for most of us, we're better off sticking with the 5speed (beefed up of course)

i think the 06 5th speed gear in the 03-05 trannys would work good. on the 06's 1st will be taller, 3rd,4th, and 5th are shorter.

Sure... That is why the enginering team from Mitsubishi decided to make a (Mitsubishi Racing) EVO 8 with a weaker tranny uh?

All that I heard is assumptions and speculations from people that really don't have the facts.

Just think for a moment, why in the hell Mitusbishi would build a weaker tranny?, why would they "make" a weaker tranny in their sportiest and top notch Evo 8 version?

I know some fact about the EVO MR 6 speed tranny:

1) Teflon coated cables are very smooth
2) clutch disc despite being the same size as the 5 speed it actually has longer springs for smoother engagement
3) short throw shifter makes the gear engagement very precise
4) noise in top gear is sustancially reduced
5) Fuel economy is better in highway
6) broader choice of gear when driving
7) different thinner tranny oil

I am not trying to trash the 5 speed tranny but I am defending the 6 speed tranny because so far all that I heard are unfounded comments about 6 speed tranny are weaker.

I hang out with other guys that have EVOs(03 and 04) and they are all amazed about the smoothness of the 6 speed. For real, there is no proof that the 5 speed is better , did you mentione the infamous transfer case issue on the 5 speed?

Why?, what was the problem that they have to switch from the 5 speed to the 6 speed? was is the whole history?

It got to be something really bad when you have to go from a 6 speed to a 5 speed, can someone elaborate more on this?

Thanks!!

yea ive driven both the MR and my evo... the 6 speed is a smoother choice, and for those of us that drive to work every day, it's nice to be able to shift softly once in a while. From driving the MR hard, I can't feel any weakness...

The front diff and better clutch are worth it too...

i don't know much about mitsu engineering cause haven't had my evo long enough to do any major work to it. i suspect that in making the 6 speed the same size as the 5 speed, the gears had to be smaller there for not as strong. although it’s adequate for a stock evo, it doesn't hold up as well as the 5 speed evo with mods. just my thought.

True, the six speed has better high speed gearing but the 5 speed will work just fine for most of the tracks and freeway ramps.

Just a little FYI....the 6 speed is NOT made by Mitsu. Also...the genereal consensus is that the 5 speed is a stronger tranny and can hold more hp/tq because the gears are cut thicker. Also, you also have to realize that for 286hp...the six speed is more than adequite...but just because they put it on the MR(mitsubishi racing) edition doesn't mean it is better....it just means there is an additional gear and to most lay people looking for a fast car....a 6 speed is "Cool".....in this case it's a novelty as well as a better gear for crusing......

The TC has nothing to do with the trannies. The 05 GSR's and RS's have the same 5-speed as the 03-04 Evo's just with revised syncros and such. The trannies are interchangeable. That's why you can put an MR 6 speed in an 03 and keep the stock TC with it's open diff.

Oh yeah?, how do you figure it?, again this are just assumptions and speculations from ignorant people. When you don't know for a fact then you become an ignorant.

Don't worry, we are all somehow ignorant in some areas, no exceptions.

Take a look of this pic:

Again, what makes you think that the gear are smaller?, have you seen them? Do you have proof?, Why woukld the gear be thinner or weaker?

How about if they hardened the gears on the six speed? By the way the 6 speed housing is bigger and the proof is that the car weights more.
I have seen both tranny from underneath (5 speed and 6 speed) in a real car, the 6 Speed is definately bigger.
