sorry if I'm late in the ballgame but after all this tranny talk, is the gear grind just common in the VIII MR? because from the database of mitsu both here and in the UK where they make the FQ320-FQ360 all of them use the updated close ratio 6 speed and 5 speed on the IX.

--- 2003 5 speed --- 2006 5 speed --- 2006 6 speed

1st --- 2.926 --- 2.785(triple) --- 2.909(triple)
2nd --- 1.950 --- 1.950(triple) --- 1.944(triple)
3rd --- 1.407 --- 1.444(double) --- 1.434(double)
4th --- 1.031 --- 1.096(single) --- 1.100(single)
5th --- 0.720 --- 0.761(single) --- 0.868(single)
6th --- - ----------- - ---- ------ --- 0.693(single)
Final gear: ------- ? -------- ? ------ 4.583

based on this numbers you would think that the new 2006 IX MR have a beefier 6 speed tranny and if there would be failure, it would be at 6th gear. Is this some sort of way to drum up some business for the tranny remanufacturers? remember that this is the same transmission being used in ALL FQ models of the UK Evo IX.

I am not sure if there is an 05-06 6-Speed tranny difference. There might be, who knows?

The design of the 6spd causes more heat on 4th gear. Jon@TRE said he has hardly ever seen a heat-related failure like this in the 5spds, but has in 6spds.

I thought the 6spd was all fine and dandy too until this summer when some have seemed to have started to fail, all about 1.5 or so years after the 6spd MR was put on sale in the USA. They are all finally getting some miles and substantial track use on them.
when i bought my car i asked the tech at mitsu the diff in both the gearboxes 5 vr 6 speed he said that it was far better the 5speed it would handle more abuse!

I agree if it was a tech from japan. a mitsu tech doesn't know anything unless he has worked on the evo for a long time. I should know, I own a lot of mitsu vehicles before the evo. I think TRE should show a side by side pic of the 5 speed vs 6 speed so we can take a look too.

btw razorlab, what tranny oil did you use for your 6 speed? redline also like war's?

I used BG2. I am currently using redline MT-90 + Heavy Shockproof in the rebuilt tranny.

The EVO has such a broad torque curve that it does not really need the extra gear. It's not like a vtec where you have to try to keep it on the big cam by changing gears constantly. A flashed EVO will make great power from 2500 RPM's to redline. The 5-speed seems like it fits the 4g63 motor perfectly to me...
