The MR 6 speed sucks for drag racing and it can't handle as much power as the 5 speed. It also has a tendency of over heating

better gearing for drag racing

more reliable tranny for high speed race tracks

more rebuilding options - stronger/different gearing combos

^true. because i know the 5 speed console doesnt work with the 6 trans as it needs the space for reverse. i have a 6 speed and 5 speed trans, so i figre once my 6 speed goes out, ill build and throw in the 5 : )

I love my 6-speed, but I don't do competition stuff. I saw some pictures of someone who swapped the 6 for a 5 recently and kept his MR console.

You can use the lower portion, but the upper part is different for the five speed. The MR console sits differently on the shifter base and doesn't allow for 100% bolt in. The 5spd top part is set back to the rear, and is more circular than oval. I am in the process of getting the right console, ordered from a member here dirt cheap. You can get the MR nameplate from Mitsubishi if you like.
