Sometimes it seems that the oil cooler capacity makes it "erratic" checking the oil. When the car has been sitting, all the oil in the motor and some in the cooler lines drains back, giving a higher reading versus when the car is hot and there is still a lot of oil in those places giving a lower reading.

Of course, this could just be me.
