Intercooler where to go ??

I dont own an evo rather an STi. But I love EVOs.. anyways do any of you know where to go to look for those nifty JDM style Up and Down core type intercoolers you always see on all the sick project cars in japan? I would love to get one and fab it for my car.

thanks

are you talking about a front mount intercooler or a V-mount intercooler?

I dont know the name of the style but the intercooler fits like a normal intercooler in the front of the car but the Rows are vertical rather than longways across the face of the intercooler.
You get more rows for the surface area rather than normal style intercooler

You'd have to change the placement of the piping...don't know if therre's room for that. JDM isn't always better.

It isnt about being JDM. It just happens that is the market where alot of top tuning companies use this style.

The whole deal with up and down core is not looks, rather up and down cores have many more rows vertically than horizontally across the face of the i/c without having to go super thick. Much better effieciency at cooling charge and less charge pressure loss when dealing with higher pressure ratios. I currently run a crawford built engine and a GT30R so I know I am experiencing pressure loss due to my datalogs telling me right off the turbo (it is tapped) that I am making 25psi when my boostguage tapped off my manifold is telling me 23.5'ish. Not a big loss if you ask me but when I want to crank up to 30psi then it will prolly be more. What do you think?

You can't always guarantee that a vertical tube core is more efficient than a horizontal tube core just by the direction of flow and number of tubes.

It's about volumetric efficiency.

Which holds more volume; 20 tubes that each hold .5 liters of fluid or 17 tubes that each holds .6 liters?

Yes this a larger volume of space to fill, but that doesn't make it less efficient at cooling.

The direction of the tubes also has little to do with how efficiently ambient air will flow over the face of the core to cool the charge air. It has more to do with the fin style and fin density.

I'm not saying that vertical tube cores are bad, nor that one design is better than the other, but there is a lot more to consider.

uhm... you'd not want to run that on a car such as yours... because you're totally not be able to have sane end tanks... if you were to put that in the mouth of your car you'd have end tanks like 23" long... which is ridiculous and stupid. they are horizontal for a reason...

if you have a split vertical tube core... as in the air went in upwards then made a u turn and came back down to exit the other "half" of the core... then that's stupid too cuz you introduce a 180 turn.

Cool that is why I am trying to better understand the principal elements that go into a sys like this.

you might have asked about verticle because you've seen that intercooler website by those australian fellas where they have a verticle row ic in a datsun 510 with a sr20det swap. the reason for that is because the front of the car is so square that in order to run a properly "long" intercooler they have to route it the "U" way. cuz either way they woulda ended up with like 20" end takes and that's no good.

Nah not really but I was just under a strong impression that it might be a better setup for improved chage air cooling. Bu tthat is why I got the knowledge from the forums. thanks all.
