my roomate (flipguy88) has the 280's, standard mods, and dynoflash, and his car is wicked. It's like you are in a rocket ship when he punches it. I got the same mods, dynoflash and all minus the 280's and it's like sittin in a civic after riding in his car. My buddy has the 272 all the way setup and he still isn't as fast. Go with the 280's!! Plus you get a lopey Idle and it sounds like a motorcycle. LOL!!!

What did the dyno charts look like though? He may have spooled quicker. I have seen 280s ramp up slower on the dyno.

IMO....

More and more duration at the same lift pushes the peak HP further up in the RPM band. Great if you have a bigger turbo or built motor that needs the leg room to make teh big powah. (all HKS cams have stock lift @10.8)

If your willing to go more radical (I'm assuming you are if your shopping 280s) more lift is where the torque AND power is at. you will need springs and retainers, but if I was gonna do it again I would go more lift and stay with moderate duration.

I don't think you do. I've not seen one instance where those cams have performed nearly as well as the HKS cams.

Just FYI.

agree - I've had customers take out Pipers and fit Tomei and JUN and been much happier

I'm not nearly informed enough to make any statements for or against (why I put up the" IMO" disclaimer). For discussion though...

I really want to believe you, as that is where I am right now (hks). But I recall tons and tons of posts and dynos over the years showing crazy torque down low with high lift. More popular across the pond.

Thinking it through though, more duration=more overlap =more leakage btwn ex and in. valves.

Woudn't higher lift "flow more" without the overlap of long durations?

EVO400 has dyno graphs IIRC. I'll do some searching later when I get home.

its funny because everyone who has 280 cams loves them but people who dont have them hate on them. I've yet to see someone who has 280's with the stock turbo and doesnt like them. I'll have 280's and meth in my 2005 soon and i'll post an update

High lift with short duration yields strong low and midrange torque and limits top end power potential. This is fine for autocross and such.

That 'leakage' is what creates the air mass inertia that makes for strong high rpm power, which is more advantageous in the 1/4 mile.

Higher lift is effective if the head responds favorably, regardless of the duration.

Interesting.

I'm not trying to hate on the 280s, but the dyno chart that I saw (and witnessed the car first hand on the dyno) showed the 280s to be fine on top, but torque was a little low and the turbo (WR) seemed to lag in spool up behind both my car and at least one other (on a side note, the owner seemed perfectly happy with the cams himself). Another owner had 280s, and then put 264i, 272e in with a TME.

I might take a look at either the Tomei or Jun cams.

Okay, so 280's rock. Assuming a stock turbo, head and short block, what else is required to run them effectively?? I know some are obvious but let's start one. Sticky perhaps??

I've seen guys run them at 0/0. Ted B has them at +2/0, but he's running alky injection and is tuned for that set-up.
