What situation would you not want the 280s? Nobody seems to say 280s don't have more peak potential. And are there any charts that clearly show the 280s give up noticeable low end? Can't you adjust this away with cam gears?
Maybe the 280s you can't get away without a tune? I've heard some say they run cams w/o tuning.
Costs the same, yeah?

Does anyone know what the duration is for the stock cams? Are they like 256 or something... (just guessing here).

i run 272s and they're hot i have 350 hp with stock cam gears and arp headbolts, running aem wideband....of course the 280s are better with more duration, but I heard CRANE TURBO CAMS are insane!!!!!!! something like 100+ hp increase...no joke...it might sound ridiculous, but its out there!!!

If you've got 280's and don't like 'em pay me $5.00 and I'll take 'em off your hands.

Crane cams offer similar gains to the HKS.. The lift is slightly higher but the grinds are close to the 264 or 272's.. 100hp increase with correct supporting mods is something I've seen with other cams too. But 100hp for cams alone is pretty optimistic for any grind..

280's seem to be the hot setup if you can tolerate the slight loss in midrange and the rough idle, funny thing is many of the people say their idle is better with 280's than 272's, I have to assume they mean the idle is more stable, because I've heard 280 cams and they sound alot like my V8 cam, or a superbike at idle (2L racing bike)

+1 on the superbike idle. The 280s on my car lose about 150 rpms worth of spool vs 272s at the lame gear settings. The car isn't fully tuned yet, so I can't comment on any other aspect of the cams.

1) You wouldn't want them if you want a smooth idle and/or if you are subject to smog testing using a 'sniffer'.

2) Yes. Installed straight up, the 280s give up some low speed and midrange response.

3) Yes. One purpose of using cam gears is exactly that.

4) That's like buying a pair of shoes and walking around without tying the laces.

5) The stock cams are 260/256, but gross duration numbers cannot be reliably used to compare different cams sets, so take them with a grain of salt.

Thanks, Ted. Good info. Can you please explain that point on gross duration? Never heard that culled out, before.

Does that mean a 264 from HKS can be different than 264 from another cam vendor?

Yes, there are a number of factors to consider ... to begin with, another vendor's cam could have more or less lift, the shape of the lobe could be different ... all while retaining a duration of 264.
