Question What is this for???

howdy guys.. am not sure if this was discussed before, but i am not sure what exactly is this for. This particular 'thing' comes ori on JDM Evos, be it IV to IX. I've seen modded evos that have actually removed it and I would like to know in depth regarding this as i am on the verge of swapping my original manifold to an aftermarket one. Please advice.

As seen in below's pic, its an original manifold on a Evo VII and it I've arrowed the particular thing that i am not sure. I've not seen this on most of the USDM Evos.... why is that so? Is it some exhaust circulation system?

Below this is a pic of the original engine bay of a IX...

This is a pic of an original engine bay of a USDM Evo... sorry appauldd for not consenting you before hand.

And this is a pic of my friend's VII enginebay with HKS GT3037 kit..... The 'thing' was removed and I've seen numerous of them removing it after having swapped for an aftermarket manifold.

Please assist.

Thanks in advance!

it's part of an egr bypass anti-lag system. Great for increasing performance on racecars, but very detrimental to the longevity of your manifold/turbo.

That is the "Secondary Air System" and is a mild form of anti-lag.

Search for "secondary air system" and "SAS" on http://www.lancerregister.com/, there's more reference to it there since they actually get it on the cars they import to the U.K. I think I found some info Googling it also.

okay, thanks in advance, but what does it do and what are the consequences of removing it as I've seen so many of the modded evos having it removed.....?

to remove you have to get a diff. manifold.

Really, all the answers are on http://www.lancerregister.com/ if you search for "secondary air system". There are at least two threads asking if you can remove it on the first page of results. We don't have it here in the U.S., so you won't get a lot of educated advice from here.
