It should be for an air temperature sensor. Lexus, Nissan, and many other high dollar cars have them as well. I havent taken apart any 05's yet so I havent traced where it goes. But there should be a plastic tube attached to the back of the slots...Now, whether or not there is a temp sensor in the us version I dont know...yet

It does look like an opening to an in car temperature sensor. The only thing that uses that sensor is an Auto AC system, which our cars obviously don't have. It might just a piece that may be used on another mitsubishi platform and used on the evo to commonize the part for cost reduction, and has not function. Not sure though.

I have an 04 SSL and do not have that -- I don't think it's a sensor though.

Hmmm.. I thought it was on the panel under the steering column. I guess it's hard to take a look behind it.

Does make sense if it's a temp sensor, but what is a temp sensor for??? It doesn't display our in car temp anywhere, or have some auto ac control... Hahaha that was the first thing my friends all ask me when they see my car and i have no idea what it is... maybe it's in my owners manual. Have to take another look in it.

I saw it to and my first thought was that there is a buzzer or something behind there. Is there a buzzer or something in that area. Maybe there was compaints about not being able to hear the seatbelt buzzer so they cut slits so you can hear it better? Just me guess

Ha!! This is funny. I've also had friends ask about this and I say "the hell if I know what it is". I've got an '05 with SSL.

Odd how not one person knows what this damn thing is...someone out there is going to know....
