Come on, people, someone knows what this is.

I think Evo8nut might have the best idea, but still I think it might have to do with SSL pkg. cuz I think only people with SSL have it. If someone has this thing in a non-SSL car speak up.

Has anyone pulled the plastic tray off and popped the panel out to see what it is? It's about a 3 minute process.

Or maybe it's there so people who try to steal the car would think it's a hidden camera causing them to ditch the car instead of stealing it.

There is absolutely nothing behind it. Yep....nothing.

mine is an 05 w/ssl ....just took it apart.

Yes, thats what it is for. My friend in Germany has his hands free speaker mounted there. He asked for a hands free kit when he bought the car and thats where they installed it. I dont know if thats what it was origonally intended for.

I thought thats what it was, I bought a cooper S when they first came out and it had the vents by the rear view mirror and the saleman said it was for a hands free phone available in Europe.
