HKS 280 with stock retainers and valve springs can rev 8k?

Installed a set of HKS 280's today and it pulls like crazy now! I was wondering if I could safely bump up the rev limiter up to 8k. I am using UTEC and have the following mods:

2003 Evolution

Megan Headers
Full 3" turbo back exhaust
Walbro 255 fuel pump
K&N drop in filter
Halman MBC set at 22psi
HKS 280 in/ex cams (stock cam gears)
Upper IC and Lower IC piping
Stock Turbo

Alcohol Injection and APS cold air intake should be delivered this week as well

I plan on upgrading the rest of valvetrain in the future (hopefully next month) when I get the cash to get a fully built head/block.

Well according to their site, HKS uses a 10.2mm lift on both in/ex 280 cams. The 264's and 272's are noted as being 10.8/10.2 in/ex. So I'd say it's probably safe, but why not just wait to be REALLY safe?

it's a misprint, they are 10.8/10.2 in/ex.

No, you can't rev that high without stronger springs. The cams will take your power out to there but your stock springs won't. I'm not sure the exact point where you'll see valve float but it will be around 7500-8K.

Stock springs make your power band look like a depth charge at 7500rpm

Ah... you'd think they would have fixed that by now.

give a pm to ted b. he runs his out to 8k. I believe he said something about the longer duration giving the cam a softer ramp up, which is less stressful on the valvetrain.

i rev to 7800 with 272's & stock valvetrain seems to still make power all the way up. i don't think you need to rav that high on the stock turbo though it will just run out of steam.

I'd normally agree with you but evodave and Trinababe are both revving over 8k on the stock valvetrain

It might rev that high, but if its making power at that point post the dyno sheet. I have yet to see stock springs making any power at that RPM. The HP graph with stock springs goes Stuka Dive bomber at these RPM's.

That's odd. Most dyno graph including mines shows power dropping off at 7000 rpm and I have 272/272.
