100 rpm? That's not a large difference.

Like another poster said go talk to TRE or Shep and they will tell you in a drag situation the 5spd is better solely due to the lack of a extra shift and the modability of the 5spd vs the 6spd......not enough space in the case for better/bigger gears.

I have driven both the MR Edition and the GSR. I prefer the GSR 5 Speed. If you plan to keep the car stock then go for the MR Edition. The transmission is very smooth. However, if you modify, I would suggest the 5 Speed. The problem I have with the 6 Speed is the extra shifting and the fact that you are always in between gears. The ratios are too close together. The 5 Speed already has close ratios, and you get to enjoy the extra torque from each gear. This problem is exposed with mods in that you rip through the powerband too quickly in the 6 Speed.

Either way you cannot go wrong.

The same can be said for virtually every car with a transverse powertrain when the move is made from a 5 to a 6-speed box. The case size is not increased, so all of the parts inside are made smaller, and when you're talking about friction and shock and all of the other things that cause transmissions to break....bigger IS better.

Not to critize more but in less than 24 hours since I responded to this topic I started to realize really how many people with EVOs (5 speed) around my area already fu$cked their tranny transfer cases).
Ebnar 03 Evo had his Transfer case replace
Andrew from Guitars,ETC decided to trade in his 04 yellow EVO 8 for a WRX on the Subaru dealer, he fu$cked the tranny with low mileage
Last night when I was talking to PJ (03 Evo) he told me that his fifth gear was fu$ked and that he could not lonegr shift to 5th.

Then , today I read these two different topics(3 more 5 speeds tranny with issues from today):

So I am not trying to blame but lets stop the bull**** that the 6 speed is weaker, I know that there are only 1000 MR's on the road and the ratio of 5 speed Evo with the MR 6 speed is much much greater . I still haven't heard a single complaint on the 6 speed and I heard a lot of issues with the 5 speed.

The 5 speed is stronger than the 6 speed.Joh from TRE posted a while back and he has looked at both and he said the gears are a bit thicker 1st and 2nd on the 6 speed but the rest are much stronger on the 5 speed. This is coming from someone who knows alot about trannys and has worked on both of them already. He also told me all this over the phone when we were discussing about it a whoile back.www.teamrip.com I have also read that the 6speed is not built by but i could be wrong

I read the TRE article, he responded to me, John from TRE has a MR himself and he said that time will tell.

If this guys can run 715whp and a 9 sec on the stock tranny I am sure I can sleep well knowing that my tranny should last.

But is too soon, there are only 1000MR in the streets, perhaps someone could have tranny problems in the future.

Plus my friend PJ told me that his 5th gear would not engage no more.. all this in less than 24 hours..

But again, the 6 speed is the "weaker tranny" right? Yeah right!!

Aren't a lot of gearboxes not manufactured by the actual car company themselves? I know at least some are.

in october, my friend and i both bought evo's. he bought an 05 GSR and I bought an 05 MR. having driven both cars, i used to think the the 5 speed tranny had a better feel than my 6 speed, but as our cars accumulated miles his tranny's shift quality deteriorated whereas mine felt better with more use.

as for abuse... he's taken his car to the drag strip a couple times... and i've taken my car to the road course a couple times.

right now my car is at 20k miles, and i have no complaints about my drivetrain. there aren't any reports on evomr either with people unhappy with their tranny. initially i thoght my tranny didnt shift smooth, but once i changed the fluids and adjusted my clutch it shifts great.

i thought only 03 were blowing TC ... isnt that kinda picking on a problem that we alll know was fixed?

i was told adding a LSD fixed the TC issue for the 5speeds?

and all i know is when speeding on the highway with friends... i can keep up with my friend's cars, until we hit 5th then the ones with 6speed gear boxes ... just take off because my 5 gear is just to wide... that's my 2 cents
