broke cam tensioner tool...help

Hey all,

I'm hoping some of you can provide some detailed info on what I need to do.

I was in the middle of installing my cam gears, and to loosen the timing belt, I purchased that special timing belt tool. While trying to loosen the tension with it, for some reason, I could barely get any slack, so I kept tightening and all of a sudden, I heard a loud snap, took out the tensioner tool, and saw half of it broken off. Now I have to try and get that piece out of the auto tensioner hole.

My question is what do I need to take out to get to the tensioner? I know I have to pull out that one pulley right inside the right front tire. Which accessories should I pull out, etc. Any info on how to get the timing belt off. ANY info would be great. Thanks!

I read somewhere that you have to turn the tensioning tool about a half a turn every 3-5 seconds or something like that so you don't break it.

Yep. Time to take off the timing belt, tensioner, and tensioner arm. Then you should be able to get to the broken piece of the tool and twist it out with some pliers.

Sometimes it's hard to feel when the tensioner has bottomed out. So don't just keep cranking on that tool, especially if it's turning with a lot of resistance. Something's gonna give. Good luck fixing this.

Same thing happend to me. You gotta pull the timing belt cover, timing belt, tensioner, and the tensioner pulley bracket (just like marksae said). It's a PITA but it's pretty much your only option other than having a shop do it for ya.

Good luck

Did you grease the tensioner?

To get the fragment out you're going to have to take off the lower timing belt cover, timing belt, and auto-tensioner like they said above.

and I might add that getting one of the idler pulley bolts off requires loosening the RHS engine mount to clear the subframe, not a really big deal, put part of the process of removing the timing belt cover and timing belt (mine also involved removing the crossmember tie bars so my 3 in dp wouldn't hit). Take your time and use a factory manual or CD-ROM, IIRC it took me the better part of 5 hours once it was all said and done. Sucks, but you don't have any other options...

thanks for advice guys. I'm really kicking myself right now for not being more patient with the auto tensioner. But it wasn't giving me any slack when it got really stiff...so I figured one more turn...*sigh* oh wells. I'll be starting this pita work in an hour when my friend gets here.
