MR 6-speed vs. 5-Speed What Evo for me
I am trying to fins out which Evo will best suite my needs. I have been told tht sense the release of the MR and its 6-speed there hasnt been any acounts of it breaking. I now know the transfer case problems the Evo's had were only in the 03-04 models. I would like to spend $30,000 or less but if the 6-speed can handle over 425whp which I hope to make and the 5-speed in the GSR cars cant then I will have to wait and save up. What car do you guys reccomend I am looking to build around 425-475whp for my daily driver and do some weekends at the track. I am been thinking for a car.
1. New 05 MR (if I can find one)
2. New or used 05 GSR (only if the 5-speed can handle same power as 6-spd)
3. 06 IX GSR or MR (if you guys think it is worth the weight and extra money)
I dont really care that much if it is a 6-speed or not I just want it to be able to handle the power and I like the looks of the 8 more than the nine besides the taillights so if the 5-speed 8 can handle the power I think a 05 GSR will be the best for me. Thanks

I bought my MR brand new and it had to sit outside last winter! When it came time to drive it I had some binding somewhere and they had to replace the transfer case! I am still having a binding problem somewhere and they haven't figured it out yet!! I love the car though, it is so much smoother than my '03 was! Love the 6speed!
Thanks for the help but I really just need to know if the 05 GSR is up to handling roughly 450whp with lauches every once and awhile and daily driving if not the MR 6-speed will correct. Thanks
If you are planning on drag racing with 425-475 whp, you'd probably be better off with the 5-spd gearing. You'll be redlining 4th before the traps with an MR and that amount of power, and then your ET will really suffer with the shift to 5th vs. a 5-speed staying in 4th.

there are NO US MR's with that kind of hp right now
I think there is only 1 in the 11's
For all we know the tranny could handle 120000000000 whp ...nobody has taken it to the levels you want yet.

This doesn't answer your question, but the 5 speed in the IX is suppost to have different gear ratios. I believe that they changed 1,3,4,5. I'm getting ready to buy as well and this is a question I've been asking myself, "is a 6 speed worth $5000" I know about the shocks, roof and what not, but that is stuff that will most likely be swapped out. So far I'm leading to a GSR, but that might change when I sit at the dealer. The MR is mighty tempting.
If your planning to do alot of road racing the six might be for you but if not I you might want the five speed. The five speed will be easier to live with since you won't have to shift as often as the six on everyday driving. Power wise the six should hold the power without a problem I just wouldn't drag race with it often.
I think I mentioned in your last thread the 5 speed is stronger than the 6 speed. Mitsubishi has come out and said the 5 can hold more torque. Jon from TRE said that the 5 speed can hold up to 500WHP/WTQ on the other hand the power level of the 6 speed is unknown. Since both trannys are about the same size the gears in the 6 speed are designed smaller to fit in the same space. The 5 speed is designed/made by Mitsu, the 6 speed was designed by AISIN. This doesn't mean the 6 speed isn't strong it just means the 5 speed is stronger. In fact a side by side comparo of the gears on the 5 and 6 speed revealed 1-2 were wider in the 6 speed, 3-4-5-6 were thinner. Check this link out for more details:
