Best paper filter?

Any have any opinions on what the best paper filter would be? I have a feeling it's gonna be stock... But after cleaning my MAF off and seeing all the oil gunked up in the intake tube, I'm going back to paper filters. I didn't have time to pick any up at Mitsu, so I'm gonna have to go with Fram or something until I get time to go down there (it's 30 miles away). I did a search but it didn't come up with much, most people said stock.

What's it a hybrid of? Paper and foam? I definitely don't want anything with oil since my MAF was COVERED in the stuff from my K&N which I've had in for about 25k miles. So I'm definitely going back to a dry filter, and I don't want foam since it doesn't filter the best. I've looked online but I can't find a good description of it. HKS just lists what car it'll fit, not a whole lot of detail.

Try the Wix 46215. Its actually a fibergalss material that the good ole boys in Nascar have used for years. I saw somewhere on the net (dont remember where) that Nascar switched to this media in their air filters because it flowed more than cotton gauze filters yet filtered more than a paper filter. I have used this filter since my Evo was new. IMO it is the best of both worlds.

How often do you replace it, on average?

The best paper filter is the Ralliart cotton / paper mesh. I got mine from z1.

I have the Blitz LM filter. A lot cheaper than the RalliArt one - similar construction.

Utilizing the same filter as the LM Core-type filters, the BLITZ® LM Stock Replacement Filters are designed to reduce intake restriction and provide maximum filtration without sacrificing the stock air-box. Unlike conventional filters made of paper or foam elements requiring oil to maintain filtering capacity, the LM Stock Replacement filter is made of cotton, without any assistance of oil – the oils used to clean such filters gradually disperses into the inlet tracts of an engine, and coats the walls and in particular the air flow sensor, slowly reducing the performance of the vehicle. The BLITZ® LM Stock Replacement is a simple remove and replace application.

And those are both dry right? But they're like $130 for the Ralliart one... I don't wanna spend that much on a replaceable filter, that's pretty steep. I live in dirty CO and the stock one gets dirty about every 7k miles... and I drive about 1600 miles a month, so I go thru 'em quickly.

Hi,

I had a problem with a K&N fouling the MAF in my Audi A4, had to get a new maf.

So, I've always been careful about wiping off excess oil before installing a new K&N, and not overoiling when I clean it.

The Evo has a Karman MAF, so it's not as susceptible to getting fouled from oil like a hotwire MAF.

In my Evo, I found oil in the MAF pipe to the turbo about 20K miles ago, and I installed a DIY catch can from at the PCV valve and the breather side. Now the MAF pipe and MAF pretty much stay clean. Are you sure it's from the K&N and not oil from the breather? I guess the breather routes in after the MAF... Did you wipe the K&N before installing it? They often arrive overoiled from the factory.

Just something to consider. I've had my K&N for ~30K miles and I've cleaned it once. Also made good power on Pruven's dyno with stock airbox.

Good luck,

FB

Nah I just threw it in, as it came... I've never had any real problems from it in this car or any of my others that have always run K&N filters. I think it's from the excessive air that the turbo moves, it just sucks the oil with it. I've never had oil on any MAF sensor from my previous N/A cars. But this is my daily driver and must stay on the road at a minimal cost to me. That alone makes me want to go back to paper just to play it safe. The K&N has definite gains, and I'm gonna miss that, but my mind's made up, so I was just feeling out everyone's thoughts on the paper elements. More than likely, I'm gonna stick with stock.

The K&N drop in is no good. I always here people say "don't get an intake, just a k&n drop in". Someone explain. thanx

the MAF was the culprit, not the filter. Audi/VW had an awful run of them for awhile, and they failed as much on stock cars as they did on modded ones

A K&N drop in is fine, the Ralliart on is fine, the HKS one is fine, the Blitz one is fine....it's all splitting hairs to be honest.
