Clanging noise during startup...sounds like a wrench hitting a metal pipe

This happens every so often while starting the car. It's kind of like when you're about to sneeze then it disappears. If you keep the key in the start position the engine will eventually start, sometimes it makes the wrench hitting a metal pipe sound a couple times before the car starts.

Any clues what this is? The car still has less than 10k miles on it and I can't figure what part of the drive train might be banged up already.

Thanks,
Sam

Yeah, that's kind of what I was thinking but I can't imagine how they broke already.

Maybe something's loose from installing the headers.

Have you found out yet?

Hey man, is this still happening to you? It just happened to me this evening. 3000 miles and no mods. I stopped trying to start it when it made the clank, I tried again and it clanked but started up. I drove around a while and when I parked I started it several times without issues.

Let me know if you know what is going on!

Adam

I would say that it is broken teeth on flywheel, starter is slipping and cant catch itself to fire

Check the top of the starter for any loose nuts and bolts. Few months back when I did my header install I had one of the nuts fell on top of the starter. It caused the starter to short every once in a while causing some weird noises.
