Has anyone measured the weight difference between stock and aftermarket gears.

Sure 272's work but they dont provide any more gains unless you run your car up to 8k or have a bigger turbo.

What if I plan on getting a GT30 or larger turbo in the future? Should I go ahead and get cam gears?

again, it depends on the setup - there is no magic answer.

I'll say this, and leave it alone - if you have the time and money to pay someone to properly set them up and experiment with different settings on the dyno and the street - by all means get them. You can shift the power band around quite nicely, and even net some top end gains with the right setup.

However, if you don't have the $$ or time to spend on the setup, I would put the money elsewhere

It's all fine and good to say that pre cam gears we made XX HP and post cam gears we made YY HP, but at what cost? Did it take 5 hours to get that result? 8 hours? 30 minutes? In addition, and I know it's a trite term, but area under the curve is where it's at - I'd trade 20 whp for a broader power band any day of the week for a street driven car, or a car driven on tigh coarses

If you go with a GT30 you should go with 280's and then you will want gears to help your idle quality.

That isn't correct unless you preface that sentence with "For the average Joe . . ."

It is not nearly that cut and dry

Why would a 280 do any better than a 272 with the same lift? Just by the mere fact that it has a GT30 (not even an especially large turbo for the car)?

Some setups benefit from the larger duration - and some do not. Him stating that he "might" do a GT30 does not in and of itself tell you anything about what the best cams will be. On the flipside, helping the idle can also hurt the power up top - thus making the use of such a large duration cam poentially counterproductive.

Again, there are ALOT of considerations - if it were me, I'd talk to the person selling or making your kit, or the person selling or building your motor - be honest with them, tell them your expectations, goals, uses for the car, and budget, and you'll end up with a setup that is best for YOU

Good topic. I was trying to figure out if it would be worth getting gears for me, but based on what I'm reading here I don't think I'll do it. I got the 264's because I plan on always using the stock turbo. My car will always be a daily driver first. Plus the idle with the 264s sounds very close to stock. You might see some small gains, but I just don't think it's worth the effort. The stock gears should work just fine with the 264's.
