US EVO performance
I am probably the old guy on the forum, which is why I ask the following question. At age 32 I have already left the "ricer" cars and moved on to other sports cars (Porsche 911 and now a Porsche 968). But...my younger brother now has a WRX and is going to be trading it in for the Sti when it makes its arrival in the U.S.. I am now expecting my second kid (time for another carseat) and the 2 seat "sports car" is no longer practical. My brother has convinced me that an AWD evo or sti is the way to go. Best of both worlds, "sports car performance with 4 doors!!". Now, will I be able to get the EVO (told myself I would never own another 4cyl after I got rid of the Turbo Talon I had back in college) to smoke my brothers STI? We are heavy into autocrossing with the SCCA and porsche club, and so far I have kept him looking at my taillights and I would like to keep it that way! By the way, getting the STI is out of the question for me, I could never own the same car as my brother...we may have grown up, but the rivalry lives on!
If the answer is yes then great, otherwise I'll be looking at the G35C, it also has the characteristics I am looking for. Basically a 350Z with a back seat.

Don't think about your old Talon when purchasing your Evo. The only thing those cars have in common is the engine (and the Evo has more stock hp too). From there, everything else is different. You should find the Evo a very rewarding car and you'll probably show your taillights to a few Porsche club members as well as your brother

I think the biggest problem will be finding one at MSRP or less right now.
Good luck!

I'm pushing 60 so you ain't even close to being the old guy in the forum
I just got my EVO8 and I tell you that it rocks
I traded in my WRX which I loved. Great little car but the EVO is leagues ahead.I don't know about a Porsche guy like you liking the EVO, it's strictly Japanese, not German. The STi will probably be a very righteous car, but they had to put in it a 2.5L engine to try to beat the EVO.
I've had 2 Miatas that I've turbocharged and supercharged (one each). My next hot rod was a '96 GSR with a supercharger, header, exhaust, Ground Controls coil-overs, stiff lowering springs, 4 way adjustable high performance shocks and more stuff
That was one fast and quick car but I think the EVO is faster, quicker and better handling (more comfortable too). The WRX was a great surprise as I was able to more than hold mu own with the Miatas in the twisties of the famous Dragon run in NC/Tennesee. But the EVO is gonna be so much better that I cannot wait to go back again
I don't think however that the EVO is a *practical* car. If you want that, you'd better look elsewhere. Perhaps something like my wife's '03 Maxima SE, 3.5 V6 with the 6 speed and the limited slip diff. might be suitable. It's fast and very comfortable but no way an autox car. The G35 is way cool but not really practical either because the rear seat headroom is not very good. For fun and performance though, the EVO will be extremely difficult to beat

Good choice .. I really got the BEST OF BOTH WORLDs .. I've got the Auto version of the EVO
Anyway .. it really depends on how you want enjoy your car .. This car is built to run .. it WILL trash both your porsche in straightline and corners

It WILL beat the Sti .. proven .. if an auto can take it .. then there's no reason the VIII shouldn't .. unless it's the JDM Spec C
Oops .. sorry .. mine has ACD/AYC
hehehe .. but you need to know how to use it for it to be effective anyway .. alot of the guys esp in UK didn't like what the electronic gizmos did .. but if you know how it works and use it to the fullest .. whew .. your car runs on spikes !!

Just got mine Thurday, Live in Austin with several hills and switchbacks and on Saturday night got to put it to the test.
We had a train of 500-700Hp Supras and RX-7s and my Evo was not only hanging with these, but actually pulling just as hard and quicker through the two-lane turns than some of the RX-7s.
I have owned several sports cars, German and Jap, and I can tell you this car stock blows away so many in so many ways.
Great thing...I beat the **** out of the car Sat. night, then Sunday loaded up the wife and two kids and took them on a more tamer cruise to look at the bluebonnets.

The EVO was designed for autocross, it has the structure ridgeness for handling whatever corners you throw at it, I have taken a ride in one and even with suspension mods on my Talon the EVO would flat out kill me in the turns, if you are worried about the STI forget it every report I have read says that they are not all they are cracked up to be, it's a new motor design and it is mated with a new 6 speed, so they will still have to work the bugs out of it. Good luck on spanking your brother.

The evo should be a blast to drive.
