really really odd problem

Ok, im working on this guys 03 gsr. It currentally is bone stock. Hes having me do a lot of work to his car...gt35 kit along with the ams stroker kit...ect. But i really wanted to solve this issue before i started my tear down. So as i said the car is bone stock. It runs, and drives perfectally fine. On hotter days after ive driven the car. It begins to over heat. So for example. I drive, for lets say 20 min or so. Park the car for about 15 min, come back out, and start her up, and the temp gauge is reading past the half way point. Its not in the red or anything but it def is over heating. However once i start the car and get the coolent flowing, it drops down the normal operating temps. It has never over heated while on, even while sitting in traffic for hours, while its over 100. So this is something new to me that i havent seen yet in my days of builing motors. If anyone has a little insight it would be much apreciated.

I'd suspect a sticking thermostat, however, I'm not a mechanic.

Could be the radiator cap not relieving pressure built in the cooling system.

how many miles on the car? Either a stuck thermostat or the radiator needs a good cleaning.

hmm...when a thermostat is stuck, it usually sticks either open or closed, there isnt usually an intermintent problem with it opening and closing. I would flush the radiator, replace the radiator cap and check the thermostat..

It can't be a clogged radiator or a stuck T-stat.

It would overheat siiting in traffic.

He stated that the temps are up after sitting a few minuites.

Did the car get the fan temp contoller module replaced by the dealership under the recall? That's probably the problem. It came out for the '03 models due to overheating problems.

Well, if it was a thermostat then it would have had problems over heating during operation. This is not the case it doesnt overheat at all while running. And the fans are working perfect. So i have no idea. The coolent level is fine, and looks pretty clean. So im stummped.

When you build it, you will definately have to change the radiator fluid, as I'm sure you know. I vote build it, see if the problem fixes itself. If not, attend to it then. My 2 cents.

It's overheating when you shut it off because the fluid is not circulating and the fan probably isn't staying on after you shut the car off like it's supposed to. That's the beauty of an electric fan. Mine stays on for up to 2 minutes on really hot days (around 100) after I shut the car off. Check to see if the fan temp controller was replaced under the recall before you go messing with a perfectly good thermostat, imo.

Its the fact that you are in traffic, the fan and water pump are circulating. car off NO circulation, limited fan. I say NORMAL!

I just talked to the owener it seams as if he did have the recall work done on it a while back. Like i said the fan works fine.....so i can limit that out. But the fact sill remains that it still is over heating. Which is not noramal

Its stock, take it to a dealer, what have you got to lose? Why risk overheating a built engine.
