Unhappy If its not one thing...its another

tonight marks the first night my car has made any sort of tranny noise. Its also at least 25 degrees out too and this is the coldest ive ever driven the car in. The sound is an EXTREME whining and somtimes a 'clunking' depending on engine rpm AND throttle position. Under little acceleration it seems louder and in higher gears it also seems louder.

Could it be a sign of low transmission fluid? I did my own clutch about 2 months ago and im wondering if something went wrong. Im familiar with the typical transmission whine but this is not it.

from what your describing it sounds like a tcase, when a tcase blows it whines, and the higher the rpm the louder it gets. sorry for the bad news, but lets hope that its not that...

I dont think thats normal. I've driven my evo last winter in below zero temperatures and snow. It sounds just like it would when it was warm out. The only difference is it takes a lot longer to warm up and may have a tad harder time starting up.

clunking, expecially while turining, possible grinding or binding noises, but usually a whining

just went for a ride and i noticed that it sounds like its coming from the rear of the car leading me to believe that its got something to do with the rear differential. Now i just remembered that i havent changedx the fluid in that little bad boy in ages....car has 13k and i bought it from Mitsu w/ 7k on it so unless they changed it, its been a while.

me too!

didn't want to start another thread so sorry for whoring on over!
but yeah, this is the coldest it's been and now i've been hearing some humming sound, no grinds (not yet though)...at first it would start on the low end and would disappear but now, i hear it more regardless of the rpm's! why would the cold exacerbate this prob though? if i take it to the dealer would they fix it? (have a cbe, tp, mbc) i don't know about the dealers over here...

Mine sounded like a Tornado siren! louder, when I got faster! If you put the clutch in, you could have pinched the "o" ring in there, and caused some of the fluid to leak out. If that is your issue, call Jon at TRE(team ripp) in Kalamazoo MI., He goes by the name GEARS on here. He will explain what happened. You can look at the thread I started, and there is a lot of people jumping in, to explain how theirs sounded. Either way, good luck!

mine whir's everytime i downshift, though it isn't that loud. has ever since i got it, and rides fine. unless the noise is REALLY loud, or you can feel something while driving, i wouldn't worry about it.

My TC issue was only on acceleration, all gears, but more noticable in 4th/5th at 60-80 MPH, NEVER heard it on downshifting. so maybe its not the TC afterall!
