Question types of turbos?

this maybe a noob question but i did search... so wats the difference between IHI turbo's and Garrett ones, Garrett ones are certainly more prevalent so is this because of cost, i know the greddy isamu is an IHI turbo but i don't actually know what this means. so if anyone wants to help a noob out that'd be great!

I also believe it is Apexi that makes the RX6 Isamu turbo. Greddy makes a 25G.

The RX6 is made by IHI and Apexi is no longer using the turbo. Power Enterprise is the new distributor.

greddy turbos are mitsubishi turbos, where as hks and ams ect are based on garret turbo charger in the case of hks they use there own varient of back housing, IHI turbos are another manufacturer of turbo i believe...not to fimilar with them

I had a set of power enterprise(IHI) turbos on my Z. Lots of people had probelms with them but they seemed fine to me.

I dont think a specific manufacturer has a particular claim on a turbo technology that makes it vastly superior to others. Most of the differences are just different development paths over the years, proprietary aerodynamic development, etc. A lot of that comes from the experience that the manufactuer has and what market it is in mostly. For example, mitsu has a lot of experience with smaller pass car gasoline engines, wheras Garrett seems to be more involved in pass car diesel and truck diesel.

There are other big manufacturers also, such as BorgWarner (formerly 3K-Warner, KKK, etc) that make the K03,K04 turbos on the audis.

A couple design elements I can think of are things like twin-scroll turbine housings, lubrication and cooling, mechanical oil seals vs pressure seals, etc. This stuff is not company specific though.
