So, is this a JDM Evo IX turbo, or the USDM Evo IX turbo. It was my understanding that the JDM's have a titanium wheel and spool better, but have a tendancy to blow up. Please correct me if I am wrong.

+1. After seeing these results, im keeping my VIII and not trading for a IX bc its obvious that 90% of the power on the IX comes from the the turbo itself

Hi guys,

To clarify the turbo was installed on an EVO VIII. Basically we feel the EVO IX turbo is worth about 15-20 whp more than what an EVO VIII will do. On 91 pump, 95% of the EVO VIII Max out at around 285whp uncatted with full 272 cams (or 280's). If catless we are comfortable we can put the car in the 310whp territory, thus giving rise to our claims of 15-20whp increases. Also keep in mind this turbo spools better and has better response!

I'm not aware of any differences between the USDM versus JDM EVO IX turbo replacement turbos (sometimes the production units physically on the car and being sold as replacement parts are slightly different), I believe they all feature an inconnel turbine wheel with a light compressor wheel, 10.5 hotside, larger compressor.

Cheers,

Gary

I posted this in the "Is it the MIVEC or Turbo???" thread as well but felt its important data for this thread as well:

-----------

More data:

Base is my car (mods in sig, stock 05 turbo)

Test is the 03 evo with an IX Turbo / 264-272 cams /cam gears / ebay 02 housing / 3" downpipe / exhaust / Works high flow cat / 720cc injectors / walbro pump / ecutek / MBC

Keep in mind:

1. This is a very low reading mustang dyno, much like Buschurs, I was the first and only evo so far to break 300whp on 91octane with a safe AFR (11.1) on a stock turbo on this dyno.

2. The IX turbo equipped 03 EVO has a HFC while my car has a testpipe

3. The IX turbo equipped 03 EVO has 264/272 cams while my car has 272/272 cams

4. The IX turbo equipped 03 EVO has cam gears set at 0/0 ( I gained 11whp peak tweaking my cam gears)

This IX turbo equipped 03 EVO is making great power for it's mods. I really believe that it can make an additional 15-20 whp with a test pipe and cam gear tweaks.

yes this isn't a perfect apples to oranges comparison but it is more data, everyone likes data don't they?

A great test would be for me to swap my stock 05 turbo for an IX turbo. Not sure if that is going to happen though.

Haha ... this is what I have been saying all along most of the gain the EVO 9 sees (more power, earlier spool) is because of the Turbo ... not mivec as some of the tuners have claimed ...
Thanks Gruppe-S

So what difficulties will I undergo while switching out my 8 turbo to the 9 turbo?

Not sure if you have driven a IX stock/tuned or not but you should before you agree with the last part of your statement. And dont forget the redesigned head in the IX's that allow them to battle knock more effectively. So its not 90% turbo and 10% mivec. It more like 85% turbo, 10% mivec and 5% HEAD!

What is so vague about it? Buschur sells a kit needed to install the 20G-9 on the 8's.
