JDM EVO IX Tested & Tuned

Just wanted to add our results for the EVO IX Turbo

Before I get flamed, please keep in mind that our dyno is one of the earlier MD 4WD dynos. A stock EVO VIII comes in at 210whp, and I cannot recall ever having seen a stock turbo EVO VIII break 300whp on our dyno on 91 octane (regardless of mods). 400whp will get you low 11's on our dyno, 430whp will put you in the 10's.

The customer's vehicle had the following modifications:
*264 / 272 cams, cam gears
*02 housing, downpipe, exhaust
*CATTED
*720cc injectors, walbro pump

A car like this will usually come in at about 260whp to 270whp. The customer's car baselined at 265whp. We added only the EVO IX turbo and the ECUTEK tune.

Results:
*Faster spool up than the EVO VIII turbo
*Better boost response than the EVO VIII turbo
*No boost instability compared ot the EVO VIII turbo (this can be usually tuned around, it's just no there anymore however).
*The car left with 300whp, 280ft/lbs of torque.

Conclusion:
This turbo is worth about 15-20whp over the EVO VIII turbo. Given a 272 cammed car with the cat removed, we firmly believe this would have been a 310-315 whp car. Considering the majority of 272 / catless cars cannot break 285whp on our dyno, this is a fairly achievement for a 91 octane pump gas turbo. Taken with the fact that this turbo performs better than the stock turbo in both spool up and response, the new EVO IX turbo is truly remarkable. Highly recommend for the Auto-X / Road race customer looking for that broad midrange power.

Cheers,

Gary

It is good to hear how well the IX's are doing. I know that there was some concern with the MIVEC, so hopefully all of these good results from people throughout the forum will put any speculation to rest.

Thought they did NOT have an intake cam for the MIVEC yet?

Did i miss a release of a cam for the new MIVEC?

This is not a IX, its an VIII with a IX turbo added to it. It seems 90% of power on the IXs is from the turbo and prob 10% from MIVEC

15-20whp increase? While it definitely seems reasonable, it doesn't seem to account fully for the power IX's are putting down.

Not sure if it's really a worthy upgrade at ~1000 dollars for 15-20whp.

This was on 91 oct, most evo IX tunes have been on 93 oct, and this car STILL has a cat in it...

That is what I don't understand...Gruppe-S says that the car would've put out 310-315 w/ a test pipe...that's nearly 30whp more than what they say a typical VIII turbo car does.

So where does the 15-20whp claim come from?

Finally are these comparisons against a 9.8 hotside Evos or 10.5?

The 15-20 whp comes from the IX turbo that was put on the VIII, if the car would have been catless, the car would have seen an additional 15-20whp from that alone, considering it would have been even higher if it was made on 93 oct, hope this helps

They are probably talking about the same car tuned for each turbo. The IX turbo will yield on average that much more power over the 8.

How would this compare to a TME turbo?

Larger compressor housing. Pretty comparible spool times. More power output than a TME at just about every level. TME should be a far easier swap on an 8 though.
