how to prime a brand new crate motor?

im planning on installing my new ams motor by myself, ive done plenty of motorswaps in dsms but ive never started a brand new motor before. I've been doin some light reading and read that you need to prime the motor before you turn it over. How do you do this? any other tips for installing a 2.3 stroker short block would be appreciated!

The best way is to use some sort of tool to push pressurized oil into the motor via oil pressure gauge port or similar. If you dont have access to the tool here is your next best way.

Fill the oil filter and cooler with as much oil as they will take, fill the motor with approx 4 qts of oil. Then unplug the crank sensor and crank the motor over for approx 15 to 20 sec at a a time unitl the oil light turns off or you see oil pressure on your aftermarket oil gauge. You can verify there is oil going to the top of the motor by looking in the oil cap hole. This route may take a little while. I also know that AMS packs the oil pumps with grease which helps speed up the process of priming.

Another way is to put the engine on a stand, complete with oil pump and accessories. Make sure you have 4 quarts of oil in the engine with the valve cover off and spin the oil pump with a drill until it comes out of the top of the head.

One of the units that does this is called a preluber. It is essentially an electric pump that brings the oil system up to normal engine pressure before the engine has turned over.

You can also do something similar by using an external pump to inject oil under pressure into the oiling system through the oil filter housing.

Both of these bring full operating pressure to the bearings before you turn the engine over, and prime the oil pump so that you are not running the engine "dry" while trying to get the oil pump primed...
