Evo Died...

My Evo died this morning on the way to work. No warning, no indications of a problem...just died and would not restart.

The CReader gave me 2 trouble codes at first, but after removing the (+) battery terminal and reinstalling only 1 code remained.

The codes were:
P0335 Crankshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Malfunction
P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction

The 0335 code is still active, but the 0340 is not.

Now...some pertinent information: I just replaced the cams like 4 weeks ago, but have only driven the car like ~200 miles since the swap. All of the wiring harnesses look to still be connected. IT has been running great for the 200 or so miles. no DTCs at all.

Question: Inside the cover for the cam position sensor, is it ok for oil to be in there? I noticed there was some oil in there the other day but didnt think much about it.

I dont think we touched the crank position sensor...I dont even know where it is?

the crank sensor is inside the plastic cover that;s over the cams. It is behind a pulley. There is no reason why you should have messed w/ it when changing out cams. g/l . Keep us posted

My cam sensor has had oil in it for 20,000 miles and I have had no issues. So either I'm lucky or it's OK.

I have been told that these are classic symptoms of a botched cam install, but I dont know why it would run fine for so long then fail.

Well, the car sat for 3 weeks in the garage...but I drove it Saturday and Sunday with no problems and this morning it died in traffic after a 40 mile trek to work.

Thats interesting, I had a situation where it was really cold outside and I came outside to start my car in the morning, it didn't start on the first try and it also made noise then I got the same two codes as you. I waited few seconds and the car started normal. My creader clear the codes, it never happened again. I been running my cams for about a year now with no problems.

i would say check your engine fuse under the hood....i blew mine and it kept giving me the crank sensor code and come to find out a ton of money later...it was just a fuse.

If it is that fuse...check your electrical connections

One of the first things Im going to check is the bolt that holds the cam sensor "target" to the cam may have come loose..?

I was in 2nd gear driving about 20mph and the car just died and would not restart.

Question: When you insert the key and turn to the ON position (not start) is the fuel pump supposed to come on? Mine does not...and I can't remember if it did before.

What you need to check is the cam position sensor first and see if the metal pickup is in the proper orientation and bolt tight. I suspect you checked the harness connection. Then Id make sure I had proper time and then the journal cap bolts. Did you stall the car or did it just die? A hard stall will throw codes like this.

Yes. Fuel pump starts as soon as key is ON position.

Im beginning to think that the fuel pump died, and the resulting stall caused the codes...but the 0335 code is still being thrown when I try to start the car. That might just be because the car wont start.

My fuel pump is not coming on with the key.

OK SO...

The fuel pump plug (on top of the fuel pump) has 5 pins. Which pin is +12vdc and which is ground? I'd like to jumper 12vdc to the pump to see if it runs. I could also put a meter on the plug to see if I ever get a voltage on any of the pins...

This would be fun if it didn't suck so bad.

Worse case scenario...I have the stock fuel pump in my shop. I could replace the walbro to check if its faulty.
