BLOWN engine today under normal circumstances. not happy.
Well, I was on the way TO the track today and the motor blew. Just passed 15k miles, and did my 3rd oil change last night with Mobil 1 5w30 Full Synthetic. "Extended life" oil my ***.
Started the car this morning and took off to meet the crew, noticed a very faint click on partial throttle (~10%) that seemed to go away under more or less load. Got 90 miles toward the GW bridge in NY before the click grew and started to sound like an actual problem. At first I figured it could have been antyhing from leaves on the fan, to whatever. Click was most prevalent in the same scenerio (10% throttle), and alot louder, but now prevalent throughout the throttle range. Car would also build boost VERY quick and seem like it was stumbling over itself. In 5th at 65 mph, giving the throttle 5% (a mere touch) would bring up 15 psi of boost, like there was a great deal of load on the motor. At this point I'm heading back home, track day plans have changed. In an attempt to narrow this click down to the engine, I decide to depress the clutch at 50 mph, and the engine stalls. Yup, engine. Sounds like rod knock. I get over the GW bridge and POP, the motor lets loose in a cloud of grey smoke out the hood and covering the rear. Coast to a stop on the side of the highway and the tow debacle begins, since I was 125 miles from home but that's another story.
Car: 2005 Evo VIII - 15,300 miles
Mods:
- Turbo XS intake
- Invidia TBE
- Hallman MBC
- Dynoflash "mail in"
..I had the car on the Dyno after the mail in, and everything looked beautiful.. AFR's got a tad lean up top, near 12:1 @ 7000 RPM but awesome otherwise. I've been about 1900 miles since the flash.

No motor shots yet, those will come tonight.

Oil plug/filter are still on the car, oil came straight out of the block via the hole that one of the rods created
..no $ for a stroker at the moment (although I would LOVE to), just plan on getting the motor back running in stock form (for now).

I have noticed a clicking noise coming from the dash onm the drivers side, comes and goes under certain rpm. Only started recently. Someone said that could be the crank or the rods. Was this happened to you?
Sorry to hear what happened. Any chance of putting it back to stock and letting the dealer fix it? Assuming the failure wasnt your fault

it was a spun rod bearing. kinda the same happend to me. the whole light noise under parcial throttle, and the BOOST CLIMBING FAST (i remember that vividly). good thing i STOPED as soon as it happend. it sounds like you kept going, causing it to get worse and worse... sorry to hear that bro
Well that ticking noise is your crankshaft about to walk away from your engine and yea it may be rods also . What does this lead us to believe about your mail in flash hmm dynoflash? You think your flash might have been related to engine failure... YES
