To build or not to build a custom turbo kit?

that is the question.....

these past few weeks, I've been debating on which path I should go with...I'm pretty sure some of you had thought about it too...Right now, I'm undecided weather I should build my own custom setup or should I buy a turbokit that's out already? The objective is to save as much money as possible and to hit between 475-510hp easily...Some of us just don't have that extra $3-4K to play around with, if you know what I mean...That extra money could go towards something more useful...I do 95% of all my installs, unless it needs machine work or I don't have the time to do it...So I'm looking to spend (hopefully) no more than $2K...Is that possible?

Here are some of my calculations:
- WG-(new or used) $100-$250
- T3/4 Exhaust Manifold (new or used) $250-600
- Turbo itself (new) $600-1300
- Misc...stuff like oil lines/etc $50-150
- Custom downpipe, unless you find a turbo that has the same hotside o2 housing in which you can still use the same oem DP location...$400-600
---I'm guessing it should be near $2K or low $2K's, if done with the best prices?---

I'm looking for serious replies/conversation only.....no BS statements like "you get what you pay for/etc..."

For the people who went with a custom turbo setup, how much did it run you overall to get all the parts(do not include tuning or something that's not included in the parts alone)?

I did not see an Evo exhaust manifold from mach V that mates up to a t3/4 turbo. I am cobbling something together myself for a 50 trim turbo.

Hows that sc61 working for you? My friend has the same on his and its such a nice turbo I wondered if it would work with our cars. And for only 700, why not.

I put together my setup using stock type turbo and components.. so its certainly possible to do with anything, its not all that difficult, I think the research will help the most since the difference between putting together your own "kit" and buying one already done, is the sizing of the header/turbo/wastegate and the O2 housing/downpipe work has already been done, plus the install components that you won't realize your missing until your into the installation.

If you have welding skills, and common sense, then I say do your research and go for it.

Oh and all I can suggest is don't skimp on the wastegate (don't buy and Ebay Wastegate or manifold, buy new and name brand) Choose your turbo carefully since you don't want monster lag by having a mismatched hot side for the exhaust volume.

You CAN put together a nice setup for around $2000 if you take your time and can do your own fabrication.. The majority of the expense is the custom fabrication you may find you have to do.

You should also watch for a used kit on EVOm.

Lets see used RNR mani=500
turbo = 1250
Tial 44mm w/g= 350
Fabrication to make everything fit with coolant , oil lines and downpipe=1000 (SLICKMOTORSPORTS) $3000.00 total. Unlike before turbokits for the evo are plenty. There some listed in the private sale section... good prices!

i think piecing together is a great way to save some money, couple things i would not skimp out on is buying a new turbo, and a good wastegate from tial.

the HAFE manifold looks like a great foundation for a DIY kit, as the clearances are right on, and nothing is too tight of a fit.

keep us posted on what you decide to do, as we can all help out to make sure the results are positive.
