"Crank Walk"

Hi Guys -

I am thinking of getting an 03' Evo and want to know if Mitsu got rid of "crank-walk"?

My cousin had a 95' eclipse GSX and told me that his year and model had a history of crank-walk and it had something to do with the axel messing stuff up, and i just wanted to know if that problem was solved. I know its not the same car but since they are both awd and prolly similar i thought id ask.

Thanks, in advance...

I remember the old saying, "Why walk your dog, when you can walk your crank!"

I'm not sure if the Evo's suffer from the same issue. So far haven't heard of anything like that.

Evo Engines and DSM Engines haven't been the same since the early 90's.

I have yet to hear a confirmed case of Evo crankwalk yet... and there are some pushing 60,70,80k miles, high HP.

I believe crankwalk came from the chrysler engineers taking an Evo motor and messing with it.

I'm pretty sure they got rid of the crank walk by ditching the 6bolt style? I think I got that right??

Actually, both 6-bolt and 7-bolt motors have crank-walked, as any motor can.

But, in terms of DSMs, the 95-96 7-bolt engines were the years where crankwalk was most prevalent. They changed the thrust bearing design in the 97+ 7-bolts and it seemed to help. I had a 99 7-bolt with 117,000 miles and over 400 HP with no crankwalk.

There were/are various theories about the cause, ranging from the oil squirter design in the 7-bolts to the thrust bearing, to the load from aftermarket pressure plates on the crank, but no true cause has been determined, and in fact may be a combination of all of these and more.

DSM guys wouldn't even bother building their 7-bolt bottom ends. They just bought a 6-bolt and did the swap.

The Evos are 7-bolts, too, but it looks like crankwalk isn't an issue with the Evos.

I think i have seen 2 cases of crank walk in Evos, but i don't think it's something to worry about concidering the thousands of Evo's out there.

Magnus explain their theory fairly well here: http://www.magnusmotorsports.com/crankwalktheory.htm

Nope this is incorrect. The 7 bolts had the crankwalk issue. We also have 7 bolts in our Evo's.

crankwalk from my limited knowledge is related to the thrust bearing design. evo's 1-4 can suffer from crankwalk, but 5 onwards have a different design so are less likely to get it apparently
