Cleaned maf (now runs like crap)

CRC is the best product for MAF's. I've used it on many other cars and trucks, it works and it's safe. You don't want to spray anything too close to the sensor, there fragile, about 10" to 12" away. Five min. is all you need to wait at the most.

Al, A catch-can would not help as it works only AFTER the MAF sensor. Usually a catch can is connected to the PCV valve on the backside of the rocker cover then back to the intake right before the turbo. The MAF sensors are getting dirty due to shoddy foam filters being used and not being replaced, and also from over oiling fabric-based filters. If you're going to use foam filters, make sure to replace them when the manufacture recommends them to be replaced. Foam has a tendency to break down and allow allot of dirt to pass through. For those that run K&N type filters, make sure not to over oil them. Leave them out over night to soak, and dab off any excess oil.
It's not about how old the car is, but how good your filter is
Actually a catch can does help out.
If your boosting and suddenly let off the throttle, only place for air to escape is through the blow off valve.
But not all of the air gets out. some will backpressure itself all the way to the intake pipe.

This is the only product I have ever used on a MAF without issue. Using brake cleaner or contact cleaner isn't worth the risk.
