How do you check for exhaust leak?
Turn the car off and let it sit for some time, enough to allow the exhaust to cool off completely to the touch. Then, start it up and run your hands along the piping and feel for any exhaust leak, it will most likely be warm and you should feel it leaking...

yeah.. or you can let it cool adn then spray soapy water on all the connections, that might work you could see it bubbling and whatnot

Grab some rags plug the exhaust and listen for a leak. It will come through loud and clear.
Some stock mufflers have what is called a weep hole and will leak exhaust but they are deisgned to let water out of the muffler so it does not rust through.
After market mufflers usually do not have this since they are stainless.
If you hold the rags long enough you can actually kill the motor but stoping the combustion in the engine because it only has exhaust in there.
